IT will be a chance to bring legends back to the club.
As part of its pre-game build-up, Port Adelaide introduced a new feature event to its Adelaide Oval game day against the Swans in Round 2.
‘The First Goal of the Game’ will see the club bring back a former player back to the club to launch proceedings ahead of the team run-out, by kicking a ceremonial first goal from the top of the goal square.
Club legend and former premiership captain Russell Ebert was the first man to do so on Saturday against the Swans, with a range of the club’s former AFL and SANFL heroes to be given the honour in future home games.
Keith Thomas told portadelaidefc.com.au the first goal of the game will be a chance for the club to return and elevate its past players at home matches, and ‘bring them back’ into the family.
“While many of our Power players are known by younger generations, it’s easy to forget there were some big names who were favourites of our older supporters during our SANFL heyday,” Thomas says.
“Of course, that heyday lasted about 50 years, so there are plenty of names to have earned the love of the outer.
“We want to bring them back to their fans and show the footy world that being a Port Adelaide player keeps you in our family and community for life.”
Port Adelaide will keep its First Goal of the Game kickers a secret until announcement inside the stadium each game day.
Both AFL and SANFL players will feature across the course of the season.
