PORT ADELAIDE young gun Xavier Duursma says the players are on the Sunshine Coast to work hard and not for a holiday.
Speaking after the first training session of the second day - after a very solid first day - Duursma emphasised the pre-season camp was about training and not luxurious living.
“Most of the guys have their own rooms - the first-years have paired up,” Duursma told media at a press conference at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex.
“The rooms are not bad - they are quite small, but we will deal with that.
“We are not here for luxurious accommodation. We are here to train.”
The 19-year-old - who played 20 games and kicked 11 goals in his debut season of senior football - said the camp was a great opportunity to connect as a group, and get behind newly appointed captain Tom Jonas.
“I think this camp is a good chance for all of us to get that connection,” Duursma said.
“We are really trying to build right behind TJ and the rest of our leaders as well. We have quite a few ex-AFL captains, as well as other great leaders coming through.
“We are going to be unified behind Tommy and make sure we have a really great connection.”
Duursma gave the new draftees as much advice as he could in the lead up to the camp, and said the club’s leaders have been great in helping the youngsters settle into the group.
“I try to encourage and explain to them and help them out as much as possible,” he said.
“All of the second-year boys, as well as the rest of the team, have been doing a really good job of trying to get the young boys up to speed.
“It’s not easy coming in - this is only their second week at the club and they are on training camp.”
The talented wingman was overall happy with his first season at the Power, but said he was looking to take his game to a new exciting level in 2020.
“I just want to take the game on a little bit more,” he said.
“I have to try and put on some muscle. Build some strength. And take the game on more.
“I’ve got a good outside game. I think I can take the game on through my speed and my running, but now it’s about trying to work on the inside.
“Break some tackles and really take the game on.”
