PORT ADELAIDE star Robbie Gray chatted to SEN SA on Wednesday morning to discuss everything from the intra-club to the State of Origin Bushfire Relief game.
Here are the key takeaways from the chat:
Gray on wanting to help those affected by the bushfires:
“Anything we can do to help out, I was keen to put my hand up and do anything I could.
“I’m from East Gippsland, so it was sort of close to my family. It’s been a really tough time and it will be good to get out there next week and raise a lot of money.
“There have been some fantastic things go on around the country and all over the world to give a little back.
Gray on the clinic he ran earlier in the year:
“I have a lot of close friends around the Gippsland area and I’ve been in close contact with them.
“I just wanted to do something - it was only a small thing. Trav (Boak) was keen to get back as well and Marcus Bontempelli jumped on as well.
“We got around a few families in the community that had been doing it pretty tough and still are.
Gray on wanting to play in Friday week’s charity game:
“I was pretty keen to play.
“I played the internal on the weekend. I was probably always going to play both of the pre-season games.
“I’ll play the Bushfire Relief game and now our last pre-season game. It doesn’t affect the preparation too much.
“I want to try and raise a little bit of money, and also get the opportunity to play with some of the best players around the country.
“It’s something that is pretty important, so I was always keen.
Gray on who he is looking forward to playing with in the Bushfire Relief game:
“You watch a lot of these guys from afar.
“I got to know Bonti (Marcus Bontempelli) a little bit when he came up for the visit in the country. I’ve always liked the way he’s gone about it, so pretty keen to play alongside him.
“Dusty is a player who a lot of people will look forward to playing with - I’m sure he’ll go well.
“There is so much quality all over the ground in both teams. Hopefully it’s a really good night. To be involved is certainly an honour.
Gray on the lead-up to the game:
“I haven’t got all of the details yet, I think I’ll find out more today.
“I think we fly over maybe Thursday morning and get together as a group. It will all be pretty quick because it’s a really busy time of year for all of the players and the individual clubs.
“I don’t think we will be pulled out of too much pre-season. We will just get over there and straight into it, and have a bit of fun.
Gray on Travis Boak not playing in the game:
“He’s on the comeback trail from the shoulder injury
“He played on Friday night but he’s slowly building. I’m not sure who put their hand up and who didn’t for the game.
“I would’ve loved to have played with Trav (Boak). We’ve been here the whole journey together and both from back in Victoria.
“It’s disappointing he’s not playing, but I’m sure it will be a great night.
Gray on how he pulled up from the intra-club last week:
“I pulled up pretty well.
“I didn’t play a whole lot. I came off just after half time as part of a little bit of management.
“I’ve been training and doing much bigger loads during the week, so I pulled up fine. We’ve been getting a heap of match-play under our belt.
“It was good to get out there in more of a proper match. It was great to get to see some young guys for the first time in a match situation.
“I thought some of the young guys showed some stuff, so it’s exciting.
Gray on Mitch Georgiades
“He hasn’t missed a beat through our pre-season. He’s been able to come in and handle the workload.
“He hasn’t played footy for a while - I think he missed all of last year. He’s a pretty big lad and likes to jump at the footy. He’s slotted in really well.
“We think he’s going to play some footy at AFL level this year and I’m sure he’ll be in the mix for round 1.
Gray on Miles Bergman and Dylan Williams:
“A couple of the other young boys were exciting.
“Dyl Williams kicked three on Friday and showed a bit. Miles Bergman and Jackson Mead (who missed the intra-club through injury) have both shown a fair bit across the pre-season.
“You put those guys with the boys we got last year and the youth at the club is really exciting.
Gray on Charlie Dixon’s pre-season:
“He’s been really good.
“He had a really serious issues with the leg last year and coming back from that.
“He’s been able to put in a full pre-season and be out there which is really important for him to get some confidence back.
“He’s running really well and we are looking forward to a big year from Charlie.
