AFL umpires boss Jeff Gieschen has admitted the umpire got the call wrong when he called ‘touched’ on a Brad Ebert snap during the first quarter of Sunday’s clash with Richmond.

Ebert gathered the ball in the forward pocket for the Power and snapped a shot at goal under pressure from Steven Morris.

The ball dribbled through the goals and Ebert began celebrating with teammates until he realised Richmond were taking a kick-in.

The umpire in the centre of the ground had called ‘touched’ immediately.

Gieschen explained the situation on AFL.com.au’s weekly episode of It’s your call, where he explains all the contentious umpiring decisions from the weekend’s play.

“I think this is one where people often accuse us of not admitting errors and this was a very close game,” Gieschen said.

“We can see Ebert have a shot for goal and we can see (Morris) clearly not touch the ball, he’s missed the ball by some distance.

“The umpire thought he heard and thought he saw it. Unfortunately an error on that occasion and it should have been awarded a goal to Port Adelaide.”

Ebert finished the game with three goals, just one short of his personal best return of four goals, set against Richmond in Round 20, 2011.
