Anna Meares is one of the most successful female track cyclists ever and a proud Port Adelaide ambassador.

IN the latest episode of MG Moments, Australian cycling champion – and Port Adelaide ambassador – Anna Meares recounts a touching moment of community spirit shown by a pair of the club’s stars.

After competing at the Rio Olympics in 2016, Meares was involved in a fundraiser at the Adelaide Super-Drome for her coach Gary West, who was battling motor neurone disease.

“We had all sorts of competitors that (Gary) had engaged with over the years come and have a fun night of racing – we filled the stands and were rattling the tins,’ Meares remembered.

“Brad Ebert and Ollie Wines came out in their footy shorts and flat sneakers and singlets and had a race on the track in support of Gary.

“I just remember the pride in Gary when they actually wanted to participate in his night – they didn’t have to, they kick footballs for a living.”

Meares was particularly struck by how the Port Adelaide pair selflessly dived into an environment they were unfamiliar with in order to help the cause.

“They’re out there on track bikes in front of a completely different audience to what they’re used to – they had hairy legs, which is not something that happens in track cycling,” she recalled with a laugh.

“But they participated, they supported him in his battle and his fight.

“That is a really good example of (Port Adelaide’s) players and how they engage with different people that are a part of this club.”
