YOUNG Port Adelaide key defender Jackson Trengove has demonstrated his belief in the Club by signing a contract extension with the Power.

Trengove has played 39 games, including every game this season, since arriving at Alberton via the 2008 AFL National Draft as a second round selection (no. 22 overall).

After fighting back from a serious leg injury sustained in the TAC Cup in 2008, Trengove made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2010, against North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium.

The 20 year-old has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in his short time at the Power, winning the 2010 Wanganeen Medal as the best under 21 player at the Club and gaining promotion into the leadership group for the start of season 2011.

Port Adelaide senior coach Matthew Primus says the Club is thrilled to have re-secured the signature of Trengove.

“It’s great news for the Club,” said Primus.

“We see Jacko (Jackson Trengove) as being a big part of our future and key position players are pretty hard to find, especially a player like Jacko who we think will develop into a great player and a pillar of our backline.”

Primus says Trengove’s influence is not just limited to his playing ability but also his capacity to be a long term leader both on and off the field at Alberton.

“Jacko is super important to the structure of our team on-field but he’s also going to be a very important player to what we stand for as a Club off-field,” said Primus.

“He’s a terrific individual who comes from a great family and he is already held in the highest regard at Port Adelaide.

“He’s driven to succeed and it’s going to be great to watch him drive the rest of the group to succeed with him.”

Trengove, after consulting his family and manager, says it was an easy decision to continue on at Port Adelaide.

“I’m very close to my family so they played a massive role in my decision,” said Trengove.

“After sitting down with them and my manager Tom Petroro, they were all for me staying at Port Adelaide, given the way the Club has helped develop and support me from day one.” Trengove thanked the Power for their support and vowed that he wanted to be a part of the Club’s bright future.

“I owe everything to this football club for what they’ve done for me over the past three years,” said Trengove.

“No doubt it’s been a tough road, but with our exciting young list I’m very confident of our direction under Matty (Matthew Primus) and our supporters should be very excited as to what our future holds.

“I was always confident that I was going to stay here at Port Adelaide and I can’t wait to help turn things around and get this Club back to where we want it to be.”
