Young forward Aaron Young could become Port Adelaide’s seventh debutant in 2012, after being named in the Power’s 25-man squad for Sunday’s Balfours Showdown XXXII.

The 19 year-old has impressed in his last two hit-outs in the SANFL and comes into Port Adelaide’s squad along with Cameron Hitchcock, Simon Phillips and David Rodan.

The only omission so far from the team beaten by 24 points by Collingwood is Robbie Gray who has been forced out by season-ending knee surgery.

Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus said Gray would be difficult to replace, but selectors also had to consider how the team shaped up against the Crows who have won three of their opening four games.

“… we’re not purely looking just to cover Robbie Gray,” Primus said.

“For one, we don’t have the single player to do it. Plus, we’ve got to structure up a bit differently to play Adelaide than what we did against Collingwood.”

Young has versatility in his game, while Hitchcock and Phillips are noted small forwards who could help cover Gray’s scoring ability. Rodan - who has missed the Power’s past two games after being dropped to make way for Gray - has the potential to replicate his midfield workrate.

“There’s no one that plays exactly like Robbie,” Primus said.

“So the guys who are named in Hitchcock and Phillips can certainly do some things up forward as crumbing forwards and pressure forwards, and David can get some clearances like Robbie can on-ball wise. So we’re sort of covering those bases.

“Youngy’s form’s been good in the NAB Cup for us and he’s been very good for North Adelaide the past fortnight.”

Hitchcock has played two games at Glenelg after recovering from shoulder surgery early in the year, while Phillips has been in good touch at Norwood.

“Running wise Hitchy is no worries at all,” Primus said.

“His form’s been OK for Glenelg. He hasn’t lit up the world, but we’re looking for that small elusive forward to hit the scoreboard and both him and Simon Phillips have done that.

“Flipper’s form has probably been a bit better. It’s tough when he played well, had a bye and then had another bye … but his form is reasonable.

Brent Renouf remains in the side as ruckman, after replacing Jarrad Redden and making his debut for Port Adelaide against Collingwood.

“I thought Renouf’s game on the weekend against Jolly was ok for a first hit-out,” Primus said. “He’ll be better for that blow again.”

Redden will be without an SANFL hit-out this week, with the Eagles playing in Wednesday’s Anzac Day grand final replay against Central District.

“They were very close,” Primus said. “So it was probably the fact that Renouf played last week. An opportunity knocked and he took it, we thought.”

The Power’s ruck stocks are further increasing with Matthew Lobbe back in action in the SANFL after hip surgery. But for now the club Adelaide continues to operate with one ruckman, supported by forwards Daniel Stewart and Justin Westhoff, and defender Jackson Trengove.

“You’re going to find it hard to get two rucks in,” Primus said. “So the pressure’s on all of the tall forwards to produce and keep playing at a high standard.”

After winning the opening round against St Kilda, Port Adelaide has lost to Essendon, Sydney and Collingwood. The Power is the away team to Adelaide on Sunday, with kick-off at 4.10pm.

“We thought the last three weeks once we got in the games have been winnable for us,” Primus said.

“For our fans it’s a big game, but for us it’s as important as what Collingwood was and what Sydney was two weeks ago, and what Richmond is in two weeks time. We’ve got to make sure that we stick at our task longer and if we do that we’ll win.”
