Alipate Carlile (South Adelaide)
Kicks 6 / Marks 2 / Handballs 9 / Goals 0 / Tackles 0

With South Adelaide losing by 59 points against the Eagles on Sunday, it was a tough day for Panther defenders. One person that put his hand up in defence was the Power’s Alipate Carlile. His performance was so good that development coach Darren Trevena, has named Carlile as the Power SANFL Player of the Week.

Trevena was particularly impressed with the development in Alipate’s game.

“He played full back on Passador and he (Alipate) had eight goals kicked on him in round one. This match Alipate kept him to only one,” Trevena told PortAdelaideFC.com.au

“Alipate is starting to reach the level where we expect him to be and now he needs to put a few games on end.”

Niggling injuries hampered the early part of 2007 for Alipate, now he’s fit Trevena says we’re seeing what he’s capable of.

“He’s been putting in extra work both on and off the field. Alipate spoiled and contested well and ran off and shut down his opponent. It was a very good game by him.”

In total, there were 16 Power players in the SANFL across the weekend and Darren Trevena has noted that there were a number of stand-outs. Here’s his review on all of the others…

Robbie Gray (West Adelaide)
K 12 / M 5 / H 9 / G 3 / T 1
“Robbie was slow early and then got into the game. He got pushed to the forward line in the last quarter and out-smarted his opponent for two goals. Once again he was clean around the stoppages.”

Ryan Willits (West Adelaide)
K 13 / M 7 / HB 2 / G 2 / T 1
“Willits was good up forward and presented well, he took 7 marks and directed the traffic in the forward line.”

Adam Thomson (Sturt)
K12 / M 4 / HB 6 / G 0 / T 0
“Adam had a slow start. He had a lot of time up forward early and then spent time on the ball in the second half. In the last quarter he got them (Sturt) back in the game with his clearance work and kicks inside 50.”

Nathan Batsanis (Eagles)
K 13 / M 2 / HB 10 / G 3 / T 1
“Batsanis was very good for the third week in a row, with three goals up to half time. He is cementing himself as a very good SANFL player. He’s going along nicely”

Paul Stewart (Eagles)
K 8 / M 4 / HB 7 / G 0 / T 0
“Paul played at half-back and ran off well. He used the ball better than he had in the past couple of games and keeps developing his games, it shouldn’t be long before he is in the best couple of players.”

Brad Symes (Centrals)
K 20 / M 6 / HB 6 / G 0 / T 1
“Brad went back to the SANFL with a fantastic attitude. He had 11 possessions in the first quarter and it was a fantastic effort by someone who had just been omitted. It was really good to see him get lots of the ball and use it really well. He only had one ineffective disposal for the whole game.”

Jonathan Giles (Centrals)
K 6/ M 2 / HB 1 / G 0 / T 1
“Giles rucked and spent some time on the bench against some good ruckmen. He was better than last week but needs to keep on improving”

Justin Westhoff (Centrals)
K 11 / M 8 / HB 1 / G 3 / T 2
“Westhoff was good again. He had to fight against the ruckman dropping back into the hole and an extra man at times, so he had to work really hard for his kicks. In the second half it freed up a bit and he scored three goals and took a fantastic mark that will go on his highlights package. He’s playing some good footy at the moment”

Nick Lower (Norwood)
K 6 / M 1 / HB 8 / G 0 / T 1
“Nick played across centre-half back. He played tough and hard and blocked and spoiled and kept his opponent to one goal. It was good to see Nick go a little bit further up the ground. There was more improvement than we’ve seen in the past, so it was a good game by Nick.”

Adam Cockshell (Norwood)
K 5 / M 2 / HB 0 / G 0 / T 1
“Adam struggled but showed some good aggression in some packs. He had three shots on goals for three points so needs to improve his goal kicking. He did improve on last week.”

Alex Lee (Sturt reserves)
“Alex had a reasonable game and looks to be improving and provided a forward target.”

Peter Hardy (Sturt reserves)
“He played down back and rebounded the ball out of defence.”

Gavin Grose (North Adelaide reserves)
“Gavin was very good in the reserves. He showed good pace and ran from the backline and didn’t concede a goal.”

Ryan Williams (Centrals reserves)
“Williams was in the back pocket and had three goals kicked against him. He probably wasn’t as good as he has been in the past. He struggled a bit being right in the backline rather than being up the ground a bit. It was a learning curve for him.”

Hugh Minson (Norwood reserves)
“Minson’s ruck work was solid and provided an option up forward. He’s improving week by week.”
