VETERAN Hawthorn midfielders Brad Sewell and Sam Mitchell proved to be the key difference in the Power’s Round 11 loss.

The Premiership duo combined for 31 contested possessions and 16 clearances as Port Adelaide’s young midfield was ‘outclassed’ by a more experienced outfit according to coach Matthew Primus.

Despite winning hitouts convincingly (54-41) thanks to former Hawk Brent Renouf’s continued good form (39 hitouts), the Power was unable to convert at ground level, with the Hawks winning contested possessions and as a result maintaining a majority of possession - Hawthorn finishing with a massive 79 more disposals than the hosts.

The Premiership favourites controlled the play around the ground as a result of their midfield dominance, going inside the 50m arc 56 times to the Power’s 41.

Hawthorn’s efficiency was significantly better than the Power’s too, using the ball effectively 77% of the time to the Power’s 69%, testament to their ability to find space and consistently hit targets.

But there were some positive signs for the Power, with young midfielders Andrew Moore and Matthew Broadbent among the best.

Moore had a career-high 21 possessions, 10 of which were contested, as well as 3 clearances, 3 tackles and a goal. Broadbent continued his purple patch with 25 possessions and 5 clearances.

Ben Jacobs continues to develop in just his second year at AFL level, working up higher on the wing to win 15 possessions, but perhaps most impressive was his competitiveness in one-on-one contests, where he consistently beat or halved the contest with his body use and ability to keep his feet.

Despite limited supply, Jay Schulz again showed why he's so important to our set-up, kicking 3 goals to take his season total to 25, and moving him into 7th place in the Coleman Medal race.

Port Adelaide’s defensive intensity was also good, applying 68 tackles to be just 2 shy of the Hawks’ number. Brad Ebert backed up his 14-tackle effort last week with 10 in Round 11, while Hamish Hartlett - who was quieter around the ground - managed 9 tackles.
