Port Adelaide will travel to Perth’s Optus Stadium in Round 5 to take on reigning premiers West Coast in an historic Good Friday night clash, return to Adelaide Oval the following Friday night to host North Melbourne for Anzac Round and then head to Melbourne to play grand finalists Collingwood in a Round 7 Friday night clash at Marvel Stadium.
Besides the Anzac Round game against North Melbourne on Friday 26 April, Port Adelaide has a number of other highlights as part of its home fixture.
The club will host Carlton in its first home game of the year in a Round 2 Saturday twilight fixture, Richmond in Round 4 in another Saturday twilight game, the Adelaide Crows in a Saturday night Showdown in Round 8 and Geelong on a Saturday night in Round 14.
In total Port Adelaide will host a Friday night fixture, a Saturday afternoon game, two Saturday twilight games, four Saturday night fixtures and two Sunday games, one at 12.40pm and the other in the twilight timeslot.
Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas anticipates the entire Port Adelaide community of Members, supporters and commercial partners will be excited by the 2019 fixture.
“If this fixture is anything to go by the Port Adelaide community has a very exciting journey ahead of it in 2019,” said Mr Thomas.
“As we said at last week’s announcement, our Shanghai game in June next year against St Kilda will continue to be a game changer for Port Adelaide and the AFL and to have the opportunity to underpin our China engagement strategy with a three-year commitment is most pleasing.
“From a home game perspective, there are many standouts for our Members and supporters including hosting North Melbourne on the Friday night of Anzac Round.
“This is the 16th consecutive time Port Adelaide has hosted an Anzac Round game in Adelaide and we continue to enjoy a great partnership with the RSL and defence community.
“We are very grateful to the AFL for our club to again be granted hosting rights of this game in Adelaide and it is an enormous privilege and one that we will never take for granted.
“In honour of the occasion, the Peter Badcoe VC Medal will again be presented to the player that best exemplifies the Anzac spirit.
“And of course, earlier in the season we are also very much looking forward to kicking off our home games at Adelaide Oval against Carlton and Richmond who both have large supporter bases here in Adelaide.
“Hosting our local rivals, the Crows, in a Saturday night Showdown in Round 8 will no doubt be another great spectacle as well and I’m sure all Port Adelaide Members and supporters are highlighting that game in their calendars already.”
Mr Thomas was also pleased with the timeslots of Port Adelaide home games in 2019.
“We are excited to be playing the majority of our 11 home games in the Saturday twilight or Saturday night timeslot. More than half of our home games are in these timeslots and all our Member feedback and attendance figures from the previous five years indicates these fixtures are by far the most popular with our Members and supporters,” he said.
Mr Thomas was equally pleased with the commercial opportunities that the club’s fixture provided.
“To play three consecutive Friday night blockbuster games, including the historic Good Friday night game against West Coast in Perth, is a great opportunity to shine a light on our club and our commercial partners,” said Mr Thomas.
As well as again taking AFL to Shanghai, Port Adelaide will play in Tasmania when it plays Hawthorn in Launceston as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round on Saturday 25 May.
Port Adelaide also plays two games at the MCG – Round 1 against Melbourne and Round 18 against Richmond.
The Power will play the Adelaide Crows twice in 2019 along with Richmond, North Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle.
Port Adelaide closes the 2019 home-and-away season against Fremantle at Adelaide Oval as part of the AFL’s floating fixture with the day and time to be confirmed later next season.
