A STRONG week of training is essential for getting Port Adelaide primed for St Kilda this week, according to rebounding defender Matthew Broadbent.

One of the Power's consistent four-quarter performers in the last gasp win over Melbourne last weekend, Broadbent said a strong performance on the track was non-negotiable for the entire playing group.

“We’ll have to train pretty well during the week, Wednesday will be the big day for us to get prepared and get ready," Broadbent told portadelaidefc.com.au.

Port Adelaide will train behind closed doors at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday before its final open training run at the ground on Friday morning.

Although the Power was in front for the majority of the game against Melbourne, it twice conceded the lead against a plucky and much improved Demons outfit.

St Kilda is coached by the Power's former director of coaching Alan Richardson, and his intimate knowledge of the Port Adelaide gameplan he helped establish as Ken Hinkley's main offsider in 2013 will pose another challenge to the competition leaders on Saturday afternoon.

And the Power will be out to play the game on its terms after Melbourne controlled proceedings for much of last Saturday's game in Alice Springs.

“We thought we got off to a really good start and it looked like it was going to be a really good day for us last Saturday, but full credit to Melbourne, they played really well," Broadbent said.

“They made it a tough game and we obviously didn’t play the way we wanted to.

"Talking to all the boys we felt a little bit sloppy, and Melbourne made it difficult for us to do what we wanted.

"The Saints present another big challenge for us, with Richo knowing pretty well what we’ll do.

“We’ll have to train pretty well -Wednesday will be the big day for us to get prepared and get ready.

“We want to continue being switched on this week because Saturday night will be massive again.”

Port Adelaide is poised to welcome back Hamish Hartlett from suspension, with injured players Travis Boak, Tom Jonas, Dom Cassisi and Angus Monfries to be assessed for return at training today.

The Power and Saints will confirm their lineups on Thursday night with portadelaidefc.com.au to have the club's full AFL and SANFL teams at 5:55pm (ACST).
