Garry Hocking reviews his League players' form following the big win over Woodville-West Torrens on Easter Monday and before the Magpies' ANZAC Round clash against the Bloods...

Player of the week

Ben Newton
Second outstanding game in a row for Benny on Monday. His first possession and contested ball use were AFL-standard and he also improved his outside game again. It’s something he’s been doing each week.

Player reviews

Andrew Moore
This was Moorey’s second game back from injury and he was much better around the footy – cleaner and with better timing against his opponent. I would love to see him burst away from stoppage and take the game on a bit more.

Kane Mitchell
Kane is in super form and his speed and running in games has been a real highlight this year. It was again on Monday as well. His contested ball use and stoppage work has improved significantly and he’s definitely one of our in-form players.

Karl Amon
Karl played mostly on the wing, starting well and looking lively. Would like to see him run with more intensity for four quarters but this should come as the year unfolds.

Mitch Harvey
Mitch found it difficult this week to present up at the footy, he stayed at home a little more than what we expect from him. This week against West we would like to see him contest and compete over four quarters.

Steven Summerton
The skipper is thriving on wearing the No. 1, continually wins his own ball and looks to setup our attacks. He wasn't as efficient against the Eagles but still poses a threat to the opposition every time he has the ball in his hands.

Robbie Young
Robbie came in for his first League game this year and took a while to get going – I really like the speed and energy he brings to the team, his pressure was great on the oppositions disposal so we just expect that from him at the moment.

Angus Bruggemann
Considering he came into the game after getting hurt the week before it was a big effort from the big bloke. He competed to the best of his ability in the ruck and got a few good hits to advantage. Very courageous game.

Ben Haren
Benny was pretty important for us, we like his flexibility as a player who we can use just about anywhere on the ground. Very competitive playing in the ruck this week but still has a couple of areas to improve on in terms of his general play.

Tom Logan
Tommy played his role shutting down the Eagles’ dangerous small forward McGregor. He didn’t win as much of the footy this week but was very consistent with his trademark spoils and attack on the footy and was particularly efficient for us across half back.

Darcy Byrne-Jones
This guy’s improvement has been ongoing each week and he now looks confident and decisive in each game he plays. His speed is noticeable when spreading to receive the ball and he is becoming really settled in his role each week.

Tom Clurey
Tom had a really good battle with a quality forward this week in Wundke, he did at times look to be outpositioned but we know Tom can be aggressive and he will look to learn a lot from this contest.

Sam Colquhoun
Won plenty of uncontested ball across half back and was confident with his skills, Sam still needs to defend first and then look to attack off the opposition's turnovers. A solid creative game and is showing improvement each week.

Campbell Heath
This was Cambo’s first game back from a shin injury and he contributed well by being strong in defence and good in the contest. Its great to see him back and he will quickly find good form to put himself back in the hunt for AFL selection.

Brendon Ah Chee
Arch hurt his ankle but did manage to play out the match with some impact up forward. He also looked sharper with his work rate which is good to see.

Cam Hitchcock
Hitchy’s pressure inside 50 was good, he did give the opposition some headaches up forward with three goals. Cameron is in good form as he finds the ball up the ground but just needs to finish his work off inside 50.

Jake Neade
His best game this year and he was definitely our best pressure forward on the day. Jake was busy in the front half of the ground, got behind the ball on occasions and was very helpful in the defensive 50. The great thing is he captured some of his early career brilliance and looked sharp in front of the goals by kicking three.

Paul Stewart
It was another really solid performance from Paul coming up against his old club. We were happy to see him play with more intensity and efficiency and his four-quarter performance is something he needs to be doing to press for AFL selection. Great to see.

John Butcher
Butch’s forward pressure was good and he hunted the opposition when the ball hit the ground, but we want to see a higher work rate from him over four quarters, particularly when presenting up at the ball and in isolated contests inside the forward 50.

Henry Slattery
Henry was his usual self again playing up forward - good defensively - he just needs to work a little harder to find more possession as well as tidy up his efficiency.

Anthony Biemans
Biemer was solid in his defensive role, he really loves to defend hard and then looks to have an involvement in offence. We can't ever question his attack on the ball and he has settled into the side very well.

Port Adelaide's next game is against West Adelaide on Saturday 26 April at 2:10pm
