PORT ADELAIDE has made significant changes to both its AFL and SANFL sides for an exciting weekend of football.

Ken Hinkley has made one forced change to the side that lost to North Melbourne by seven points last Sunday, with John Butcher omitted from the side.

Angus Monfries will miss his first game since joining the club at the end of 2012, while Chad Wingard has also been withdrawn through injury as expected.

Elevated rookie Sam Gray will make his debut for the club at AFL level after several strong performances in the SANFL in Saturday afternoon's game against the Lions.

It’s a significant achievement for the club, with Gray originally joining the club via its country zone as an underage player and working his way through the Magpies ranks to win last year’s A.R.McLean Medal.

Port Adelaide’s senior coach Ken Hinkley praised Gray’s ability to earn a promotion to the senior list and make his AFL debut.

“Sam hasn’t missed a beat for us all pre-season apart from the shoulder injury he had at the end of last year,” Hinkley told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“He made an impact in Dubai and has been in the best three for the Magpies every week.

“It’s a reward for his consistent form.”

Aaron Young and Cam O’Shea will also return to the Power lineup.

Hinkley said the decision to omit Butcher came down to achieving a better team balance for a smaller Brisbane Lions lineup.

“Obviously we have two forced changes and we’ve made the third to strike a bit more team balance,” Hinkley said.

“We didn’t feel we’d quite get the benefit we want with three tall forwards.

“We’re very mindful Brisbane mightn’t be as tall as some of the other teams we’ve faced.”

The selection of three SANFL players and the return of several others from injury has also shaken up the composition of the Magpies League side.

Butcher has been named at centre half forward for the Magpies, while Andrew Moore and Ben Newton will make their return for their first League games of the year.

It’s a competitive lineup for the Magpies, which also welcomes the return of Robbie Young and Aseri Raikiwasa into its squad of 23 from the club’s Academy side.

SANFL coach Garry Hocking wants to see his team respond to their disappointing loss to Norwood last Thursday.

“We need to respond to our performance in Round 1 - that’s the most important thing - and we need to respond over four quarters, not one half,” Hocking told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“John Butcher coming in will give us more presence up forward with Mitch Harvey and Ben Haren our other talls.

“We want him [Butcher] to attack everything that comes his way.

"Moore and Newton also come in for O’Shea and Young and give us good presence around the ball and through the middle.

“Bobby Raikiwasa and Robbie Young are also on the extended bench after good performances in the Academy win last week.

“Raikiwasa went back and gave good leadership and effort that helped get our young Academy team over the line, and Young gives us some pace and presence - they’re both in the mix.”

The Power will wear a special 2004 replica guernsey to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the club's historic AFL premiership win over Brisbane when it hosts the Lions at the Adelaide Oval at 1:40pm on Saturday. Gameday guide

The Magpies will also play their first home game for the 2014 SANFL IGA League season against old rivals Glenelg at Alberton on Sunday at 2:10pm. Gameday guide
