AS Adelaide swelters through its third longest heatwave, Port Adelaide will make few changes to its training regime according to high performance manager Darren Burgess.

He told portadelaidefc.com.au while the club's footballers will enjoy longer hydration breaks and periods between drill work, his fitness program would remain entirely unchanged despite training on consecutive days with forecast temperatures over 43 degrees.

"We'll have longer breaks between our drills, give them more chances to take fluids in, and maybe use the ice towels and ice vests at different times," said Burgess.

"But otherwise nothing much will change."

Heat training has been a trademark of Port Adelaide's pre-season campaigns under Burgess, who took the coaches and playing group to the United Arab Emirates in November 2013 to undergo more than a week of heat training at the Dubai Sports City.

With the mercury only expected to dip below 40 degrees on Saturday, there may be some added benefit for the Power's players training in the traditionally inhospitable conditions of a summer in the driest state of the driest continent.

But while he won't make any changes to the work undertaken by his charges, Burgess says the safety of players remains paramount.

"We like the heat and like training in the heat so hopefully we get some benefit out of training during a heatwave," said Burgess.

"But the players' health will always be number one and we test the boys before each session in terms of their hydration and after each training session.

"We make sure there is no danger for them at any time."

Burgess has been encouraged by the on-track progress of the playing group during a period where most clubs enjoy their hardest training block for the pre-season.

"January is always a really tough month for any AFL club and we're certainly no different," said Burgess.

"We working really hard with a lot of numbers on the track at the moment and everyone is handling the load really well.

"The whole group has taken their commitment to the next level and we're looking forward to that continuing."
