In his own words - Matthew Primus

”They’ve (the players) been terrific all pre-season, all NAB Cup, all season in their ability to keep preparing themselves, getting themselves up for training, up after games, disappointing games that we had early in the season.”

“The resilience to keep presenting for the contest and keep wanting to get better I couldn’t have questioned so I think there’s a bit of that factor (behind the win) and that they (the players) got a sniff - instead of it being 20 or 30 points behind with ten minutes to go they were a bit closer.

“I was real proud of them to try and take on the game which we were trying to do all game but we made some monumental errors - skill errors.

“I just think they kept on believing, kept on trying to play on there was a lot of good leadership for our guys to keep believing in themselves and take the game on.”

What it means

Port Adelaide’s season is back on track with Saturday’s win an important confidence-booster for the club. Wins go a long way in football to getting more wins. It seems an obvious and simplistic statement, but playing with confidence is worth a couple of straight kicks. The importance of continuing to win games of football cannot be understated however, and coach Matthew Primus is thirsty for more wins to continue his fledgling team’s development.

The future

Now sitting at 2-6, Port Adelaide must take full advantage of playing the Gold Coast away this weekend. Port went down to the Suns last year as it struggled to find form with a super-young list and slowing veterans. Port Adelaide’s 2012 team is an improvement on last year and with its proven ability to push last year’s finalists and with resilient performances against St Kilda and now the Roos, it should be capable of netting a win at Metricon Stadium next Saturday. It will be important for the Power to get on the front foot with tough challenges against Carlton and Hawthorn in the following weeks.

Injury list

No ongoing injuries were reported from this game.

The Black and White

Port Adelaide went down to the Tigers at Glenelg Oval on Friday night. Fighting to get back into the game, Port headed the Tigers at half time but were unable to maintain the ascendency through the second half - eventually going down to Glenelg by 3 goals. The Magpies are precariously placed on the ladder ahead of the Eagles and Sturt, but need to capitalise on its chances if it is to play finals this year.

Port has a fortnight’s rest from SANFL action with the League-wide bye due to the SA v WA state game next weekend and its Foxtel Cup qualifying final against Morningside Football Club on June 2.
