FORMER Port Adelaide captain Warren Tredrea will have surgery on his injured right ankle on Monday night and will be sidelined for 10-12 weeks.

Scans revealed that Tredrea ruptured an ankle ligament early in the second quarter of Saturday's win over Essendon at Etihad Stadium.

Tredrea is second on Port Adelaide's goal scoring list this year with 10 goals and was last year's best and fairest winner.

The injury is a cruel blow to Tredrea, whose career looked like it was coming to end two years ago before rediscovering his best form last year to finish the season with 51 goals.

Questions will now be asked about whether the ankle injury represents the final chapter in Tredrea's career.

Port Adelaide will issue a statement on Tuesday outlining the result of the surgery.
