AFL FOOTBALL is a big step closer to being played at Adelaide Oval from 2014, after the SANFL and SACA today confirmed they have signed letters of intent to make a redeveloped Oval the home of football and cricket in South Australia.

The redeveloped Adelaide Oval will be one centrepiece of a broader $1.1 billion redevelopment of the entire Riverbank Entertainment Precinct, from North Terrace across to the Oval, including the Adelaide Convention Centre and Adelaide Casino.

The signing of the letters of intent is a pivotal stage in the process, with football and cricket both confirming that a redeveloped Adelaide Oval will deliver significant financial benefits for all concerned.

SANFL Executive Commissioner and Stadium Management Authority CEO Leigh Whicker said it was “a momentous day for our two sports as we confirm our intent to make Adelaide Oval the home of football and the home of cricket in South Australia.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to create a world class stadium in the city for future generations of South Australians.”

Critically, South Australian football is united behind the move, with the SA Football Commission, the nine SANFL clubs and the two AFL clubs - Adelaide and Port Adelaide - having signed up.

The SANFL is expecting a financial uplift from the move in excess of $8 million per year for football alone, while projections for the Port Adelaide Football Club indicate an increase of 70% in club membership and 27% in crowds.

Power Members will be sent an Adelaide Oval Information Pack in the next fortnight, either electronically or in hard copy (for those without email/internet access) and a Power Member Information Night will be held on Wednesday evening 29 September at The Port Club.

There are still some work-in-progress issues to finalise - such as additional car parking and control of the Oval precinct - and all parties will continue to work through these. Importantly, SACA members must later this year vote on the proposal.

The Port Adelaide Football Club will continue to keep Members updated as progress on this exciting project unfolds
