Port Adelaide's football development team witnessed a number of encouraging performances right around the state league with Simon Phillips providing a four goal performance in Norwood colours to win the team's player of the week award.
Simon Philips
13 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 goals, 2 inside 50s
Flip played all forward, kicked 4.2 and had 13 possessions and had a much better game on the last couple of weeks so it was a definite positive for him. He’s now putting some pressure on our senior team which is good. He was pretty clean with his skills in a wet game at The Parade and did quite well overall for the Legs.
League
John Butcher (for Port Adelaide v Bulldogs)
12 Disposals, 9 marks, 1 hit out, 1 clearance, 4 inside 50s
In his second game back we were pretty happy with the fact that he was able to run out the game a lot better than last week. Best thing to come out of the game was the second half where he ended up with nine marks and ten possessions. He missed two goals and gave four off so he had plenty of scoreboard impact. He’s started to show some leading, jumping at the footy and running that we need to see. It also looks like he’s free of his hip injury so hopefully it’s onward and upward for him from here.
Alipate Carlile (for Panthers v Double Blues)
20 Disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 14 rebound 50s, 2 inside 50s
Bobby Carlile went back to South to help him work towards getting his fitness back. He played full back and was the rock of Gibraltar back there for the Panthers. He played really well and was one of their best players on the day. A really strong game for Bobby and he certainly helped South get up for the win having a big influence on the game.
Cameron O’Shea (for Panthers v Double Blues)
18 Disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goals, 2 rebound 50s, 4 inside 50s
Cam O’Shea took a big step forward this week in the League for South. He was really clean with his hands and ended up kicking a couple of goals, finished with 17 possessions and generally had a pretty good hit out for him - a real confidence booster.
Aaron Young (for Roosters v Eagles)
19 Disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackles, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s
‘Youngy’ played midfield and forward had 19 possessions and 4 clearances for the Roosters. He played O.K. but wasn’t as good as he has been in other games for North this year. He serviced the ball well in the first half but didn’t get any shots on goal. His second half was better but the Eagles ended up winning the game pretty easily so he opportunities were more limited than usual. It wasn’t an outstanding game but pretty serviceful for him coming back from his ankle injury.
Nathan Blee (for Roosters v Eagles)
10 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 3 rebound 50
‘Bleezy’ was pretty good and played in defence all day. He had a couple of different opponents and beat all of them, used the ball well and linked up well in the first half. He didn’t get to see much of it during the second half, but that in part was due to the Eagles running away with the game. Defensively though he was very good.
Daniel Stewart (for Roosters v Eagles)
7 disposals, 3 marks, 8 hit outs, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s
Daniel Stewart played forward and helped out in the ruck, but only ended up with 7 possessions, 3 marks and 8 hit outs so it wasn’t a great game from big Stewy. He wasn’t very influential and didn’t get any shots on goal so a bit down on previous weeks from him.
Cameron Hitchcock (for Tigers v Redlegs)
15 Disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 2 clearances, 1 goal, 3 inside 50s
Hitchcock played up forward for the Bays who were smashed by Norwood so it was hard for him as a small forward in the wet conditions to find much of it. He ended up with 15 possessions, kicked 1 goal and placed a few tackles and when the ball was in his area, so he got involved when the chance was there but unfortunately those opportunities were few.
Tom Jonas
17 disposals, 1 marks, 2 hit outs, 4 tackles, 4 clearances, 3 rebound 50s, 1 inside 50s
Thomas Jonas played in defense and midfield and another pretty good game from him. He cleary beat his opponent when in defense and applied good pressure and tackling when in the middle. 17 possessions and 4 tackles and 4 clearances and had some impact on the game in a solid performance from young Tommy.
David Rodan
17 Disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 5 clearances, 2 goals, 1 rebound 50, 3 inside 50s
D-Rod played all midfield and forward, had 17 possessions 5 clearances and 2.2. Had some good impact on the game in a dominant Norwood side. He’s getting better on his defensive stuff and pushing back and helping out and you can see there’s were some good examples of him trying to do that throughout the game. He was good around the stoppages and his decision-making and kicking was very good.
Reserves
Brendon Ah Chee (for Port Adelaide v Bulldogs)
12 Disposals, 6 marks, 2 rebound 50s, 2 inside 50s
Played on ball, wing and half forward and had probably one of his most disappointing games of the year, he’s in a bit of a low patch at the moment. He wasn’t able to impact on the game as we would have hoped and ended up going into the backlines during the second half. He ended up with 13 touches, still putting a lot of pressure on in the midfield and at stoppages, but it continues to be his running and spreading that we’re working on. As is often the case with newer boys in their first year, the middle of season can be a bit of a drain.
Jasper Pittard (for Double Blues v Panthers)
15 Disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 5 clearances, 3 rebound 50s, 1 inside 50
Jasper Pittard came back in the twos for Sturt in just his first hit out back from injury. He played about 60-70% and improved as the game went on, bit slow to start and a little bit rusty but you know that happens once you have a had a bit of time out with a injury. The most important thing for him was getting through the game with his hamstring - it seemed really strong. He did take a knock to his wrist early but he is ready to go and we are looking forward to seeing it in his second one.
Mitch Curnow (for Double Blues v Panthers)
11 Disposals, 2 marks, 16 hit outs, 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 goals, rebound 50, 2 inside 50s
Mitch played in the ruck and a little bit down forward and kicked a couple of goals late in the game which will be good for his confidence going forward cause because he wasn’t great in the ruck.
Jarrad Irons (for Eagles v Roosters)
20 Disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles, 3 clearances, 1 goal, 2 inside 50s
Irons played in the Reserves for the Eagles but it wasn’t a fantastic game for him this week. Playing in the midfield and across half back, he got a little bit of the ball but the aspects of his game that are normally positive - his decision making and kicking particularly - just weren’t there. He’s got a few areas to work on and the positive thing is his good attitude towards achieving those goals. He has been training pretty well and just needs to convert that on the field.
