In Round 7 of the 1998 AFL season, a 19 year old Warren Tredrea announced his arrival on the national football stage as a genuine star of the competition by booting a club record (AFL) 8 goals against Carlton.

The young forward, playing in his eighth AFL game, had scored seven goals for the year leading into the game and shown glimpses of his talents, but truly exploded onto the scene with a remarkable 22 disposals, three brownlow medal votes and a rising star nomination to go with his massive goal tally.

Tredrea dominated the game, running Carlton premiership defender Peter Dean ragged and causing Denis Cometti to plead “somebody get a towel out to Peter Dean, he’s getting a bath,” during coverage of the game.

Carlton could not contain Tredrea's performance and he continued to dazzle spectators with his marking prowess and forward line presence.

Despite leading the Power to an 89-point win, the day finished on a sour note for the new superstar when he went down injured with a dislocated kneecap late in the fourth quarter.

The injury would keep him out of the side for five weeks.

After his return Tredrea went on to score bags of majors against Essendon (4 goals), Melbourne (3) and Fremantle (6), finishing the year with 33 goals and winning the first of his eight leading goalkicker awards for Port Adelaide.

The eight goals Tredrea scored against Carlton remains a club record with many sharing the second-best mantle of seven goals, including Warren himself, but to this day it still remains as the single greatest goal scoring exploit by an Port Adelaide player in the AFL.
