PORT Adelaide senior coach Matthew Primus says that Kane Cornes is likely to be deployed in a tagging role during this weekend’s clash against Carlton, with Chris Judd set to be his next target.

Cornes has had a rejuvenated season this year after being moved back into the tagging role that served him so well throughout his career.

The Port Adelaide midfielder has been in fine form over the last fortnight, keeping two of the competition’s best midfielders in Brent Harvey and Gary Ablett to their quietest games of the season.

Both Harvey and Ablett struggled to have their regular impact against Port, with Cornes keeping them to their lowest numbers in disposals and marks for 2012.

Kane now has Carlton captain Chris Judd in his sights as Primus plans to unleash the stopper on the Blues midfielder this weekend.

“Yeah he’ll probably be set for Judd I would’ve thought,” Primus said.

“Judd is still dominating their clearances a fair way from their next best clearance player, but they are putting a lot of different guys through there [the midfield] with all of the injuries that they’ve got… that’s something we’ll look into.”

Primus was also quick to outline the importance of the midfield battle in determining the game.

“Everything’s generated out of there [the midfield], you generate your inside 50s… you stop the opposition in there, all those sorts of things,” he said.

“We think everyone understands that’s where the game is won and lost, it’s where you give yourself the opportunity to kick a winning score and stop the opposition from getting clean possession of the ball.”

Judd has been in good form this season with Carlton dominating the clearances for the Blues and leading them to a win against Melbourne last weekend.

With the battle in the midfield potentially determining the result of Saturday night’s clash at AAMI Stadium, Cornes will be pivotal in shutting down the Carlton captain.
