SANFL Player of the Week
Nick Salter (For Eagles v Magpies @ Alberton)
With 24 possessions and 5 marks playing up through the midfield as well as in the forward line, Salter was lively and active in his role on-ball as well as getting forward to boot 2 goals in the first half. 17 of his 24 possies came through the midfield, as he tackled, chased, ran hard, and hunted the ball all over the ground. This included playing down back late in the game, where he was able to control play when the Magpies were challenging. He was definitely an important player in terms of his influence on the momentum of the game, and finished with 4 goals for the day.
Justin Westhoff (For Centrals v Norwood @ Coopers Stadium)
Justin started forward, playing on McGuiness, and managed to break away several times and take a few strong lead-up marks. Importantly, he also contributed both on the scoreboard and with one-percenters. He mostly played up the ground as a high forward, and also involved himself in a few ruck contests. He ended up booting 2.2, had 15 possessions, and importantly laid 3 tackles. It could be enough to see him back in the Port Adelaide side to take on Sydney this Saturday night.
Jay Schulz (For Eagles v Magpies @ Alberton)
Jay’s work-rate was excellent in the first half where he was proactive leading up from a deep lying pos in the forward line. He picked up a knock to his hip in the third, but finished really well in the last, booting 2 goals in the final term. He finished with 16 possies, 6 marks and 1 tackle. It was another very solid performance at SANFL level.
Mitch Banner (For Eagles reserves v Magpies @ Alberton)
Unfortunately Mitch hurt his shoulder after playing the first 3 quarters and didn’t return after that. Before he was hurt it was an encouraging performance when on the field, finishing with 24 possessions, winning a few clearances and he was good at stoppages.
Jarrad Redden (For Eagles reserves v Magpies reserves @ Alberton)
Returning from injury, Jarrad played ruck / forward, contested well at the centre bounces, and also positioned himself well around ground where he sat behind ball. He was also able to compete up forward. As expected given this was his first game since being injured, he tired towards end, but there’s little doubt he and will benefit from the run.
Cam Cloke (For Magpies v Eagles @ Alberton)
Cam played forward as well as in the ruck. He got his hand to ball several times, gaining 13 hit-outs, giving his midfield first use of the ball. He booted 3 goals from 4 set shots, so his conversion was excellent on the day. He worked hard to contribute at stoppages after performing well in ruck, and was more assertive and aggressive in his play. He finished with 15 possies and 8 marks to accompany his goal tally and hit-out numbers.
Wade Thompson (For Roosters reserves v Panthers reserves @ Prospect Oval)
Wade played as a high half forward in the first half and wasn’t able to use his speed as a result of positioning. In the second half he went deep forward and had a very good third term in particular, contributing 3 goals. After receiving a knock in the last he came back on and booted another - he needs to produce 4 quarters like he did in the third to push for selection. His final numbers included 14 kicks, 5 marks, 4 goals and 1 behind.
Jasper Pittard (Guest player for Panthers reserves v Roosters reserves @ Prospect Oval)
Jasper started down back and had good passages of play where he was able to gain some tough ball. He tried to run and carry at times and had a greater impact when pushed up onto the wing in the third in what was a solid hit-out. He finished with 3 kicks, 4 marks, 9 handballs.
Daniel Bass (for Panthers reserves v Roosters reserves @ Prospect Oval)
Daniel started up forward in a new position for him, and struggled to get into game, but he will improve with a greater knowledge from work throughout the week in that sort of position. He was pushed into the ruck in the third quarter and had an impact at stoppages and around the ground in a good battle with Cain Ackland, a former AFL player for Port Adelaide and Carlton. He definitely enjoys competing around the ground, finishing with 7 kicks, 6 marks, 7 handballs as well as 8 hit outs.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v Magpies reserves @ Alberton Oval)
Glenn looked as lively as ever, with 5 good lead up marks inside the forward 50, with his chasing and harassing and forward pressure important - it’s a real area of his game that he’s improving on. He needs to keep improving every week in these areas.
Matt Westhoff (for Centrals reserves v Norwood @ Coopers Stadium)
Matt played forward as well as in the ruck behind the play, and while up forward he tried to pressure the opposition and keep the ball inside the 50 metre arc. His positioning behind the play was good, where he took a couple of marks. This was his second game back from injury and he will get better as he gets more time in the field.
Scott Harding (Guest player for Central reserves v Norwood @ Coopers Stadium)
Scott worked hard at times to get to contests, but perhaps not being a real part of the side he missed opportunities to receive the ball as he didn’t understand his team’s gameplan and structure. He tackled and worked defensively well back inside the opposition 50 to help out, and kicked nice goal from a stoppage in the last quarter where he won the ball and ran away, kicking it from just inside the 50 - a real highlight of his game.
