SANFL and Port Adelaide launch ‘Girl Power’ The Port Adelaide Football Club in conjunction with the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) is looking to engage young girls and women in a new initiative appropriately dubbed Girl Power.
Power stars Steven Salopek and Dom Cassisi joined club and SANFL officials at St Mary’s College in the city on Tuesday to launch the program.
Girl Power is a program aimed at school-aged girls with the view of introducing them to the game of football and increasing their involvement and understanding of opportunities in football.
Port Adelaide chief executive John James said the club was thrilled to be partnering the SANFL and again be leading the way with education of young South Australians and in particular involving females of all ages with football.
“Through the Power Community Youth Program, Power Schools, Power Skills, Find the Power Within and our Planet Teal activity we have a range of programs that focus on education and interacting with the youngsters of South Australia,” said James.
“We’ve also done a lot of work with females specifically through our sponsorship of Netball SA and our Women in Power membership, and we know that they make up half our supporter base.
“Girl Power is a great initiative. Along with the SANFL, we look forward to providing greater education and opportunities in football for young females in this state.”
SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker was equally pleased to be taking a lead through Girl Power.
“The SANFL are delighted to be in partnership with the Port Adelaide Football Club with the Girl Power program. More importantly Girl Power provides a very meaningful opportunity for young girls and women to be actively involved in our great game,” Whicker said.
The Girl Power program will commence in Term 3 and run until the end of the school year. Footballer and football coach Bridget Grant will head up the program, with the support of SANFL staff and Power staff and players.
