Port Adelaide's young guns all contributed well for their respective reserves sides this week, whilst David Rodan dominated the midfield for Norwood in the SANFL League.

Tyson Edwards saw two dominant performances across the weekend with Rodan cleaning up for the Redlegs against Sturt with a huge 28 disposal performance and Tom Logan also playing strongly in the Bays' defence.

Daniel Healy saw the Roosters v Centrals game at Prospect, with several players lining up for North Adelaide's League side, including Daniel Stewart who was a dominant forward option for North.

Matthew Nicks saw both the League and Reserves games played between West and South Adelaide - where Matthew Lobbe and Ben Newton stood out in the red sash.

SANFL Player of the Week

David Rodan (for Redlegs v Double Blues)
28 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal

D-Rod had 28 possessions, kicked a goal and had 5 clearances. He had a great start to the game getting about 10 possessions in the first quarter and had a really solid day - influential around the ground and hard at the ball which is good to see from him.

League

Tom Jonas (for Redlegs v Double Blues)
15 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 inside 50s

Played his first game from a couple of weeks out, played a pretty good game in what was his first full game in the midfield so it was good that Norwood played him there and hopefully they continue to do so - it’s a spot that we might look to put him for the Power midfield.

Simon Phillips (for Redlegs v Double Blues)
13 disposals, 3 mars, 2 tackles, 3 goals

Played all-forward, kicked three goals (all in the first half) which was really good. The delivery wasn’t fantastic so for ‘Flip’ to kick three was a good effort. He could’ve had a few more if he’d stuck a couple more tackles and been a bit cleaner.

Tom Logan (for Tigers v Port Adelaide)
26 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s

Played Friday night and had a really good game (he was close to getting Player of the Week). He’s been in really good form in every game he’s played for Glenelg this year. He played all in defence, used the ball quite well and had 26 possessions, so really positive stuff from him.

Daniel Stewart (for Roosters v Bulldogs)
14 disposals, 8 marks, 5 hit outs, 2 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 goals

Danny went back to North and played a very strong game for them. Centrals couldn’t find a match up for him in the first half and took some really strong, contested marks. He kicked 2.1 and ended up with 14 possessions and 8 marks. He was a bit quieter in the second half, due mainly to a lack of supply and having a new opponent on him. It was a pretty solid hit out for him and he was certainly the most dominant forward on the ground.

Andrew Moore (for Roosters v Bulldogs)
17 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 6 clearances, 2 inside 50s

Was not as impressive as he has been. He had 17 possessions and still had 6 clearances and a number of tackles. Around stoppages he has improved so much and he makes it an easy task to put his name up to the selectors for an AFL midfield role because he’s shown that he’s learned some good stuff and is a big body that we require. He probably just lacked a bit of outside uncontested ball this week compared to other weeks, but still a better performance from him this week.

Nathan Blee (for Roosters v Bulldogs)
9 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 rebound 50s

This was probably Nathan’s best game, certainly best game defensively for the year. He had 9 touches but his focus this week but his focus was on the defensive stuff that he’s lacked the last couple of weeks. He kept Matthew Westhoff to one kick, which he got in the last quarter. He positioning, bodywork and spoiling was very good and something that he needed to get back to. It’s really pleasing that he’s been working on those things and got some reward for it.

Daniel Webb (for Bloods v Panthers)
6 disposals, 6 marks, 4 hit outs, 2 goals

Webby came off a bit of illness during the week and played deep-forward for the game. He ended up kicking 2.2 and should’ve probably kicked four, but I think he competed well, although not up to the standard he’s shown in other games this year in terms of his intensity at the ball. Maybe it came down a bit to his illness so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt this week!

Matthew Lobbe (for Bloods v Panthers)
11 disposals, 7 marks, 20 hit outs, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s

Lobbes came up and played in the ruck for the League side. Competed super-aggressively around stoppages and his second efforts and hunting of the ball were some of the key areas he’s focussed on. Probably the best part of his game was getting back and taking some marks to set up West defensively from the back line. It was a really good game for him and he’s putting a lot of pressure on our senior rucks so that can only be good for our AFL side.

Cameron O’Shea (for Panthers v Bloods)
13 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, 1 clearance

Cammy played more up through the midfield and finished off playing a reasonable game. We’d probably like to see him get a bit more of the footy and we’re going to work on that during the week - particularly with regard to his mindset about how he’s going about his footy.

Reserves

Brendon Ah Chee (for Port Adelaide v Tigers)
21 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 1 goal

Played mainly on-ball and up forward but wasn’t as good as he’s been in the past few weeks. He still had 21 possessions, kicked a goal and was the Magpies leading team-involvements players (they have a stat for tackles, chases blocks, shepherds , contested ball wins etc) - he’s been high in that count all year and he won it again on the weekend which has become a trade of his game which is really pleasing. So again, whilst he wasn’t dominant he’s still sniffing around. Hopefully he’ll get a crack at the Maggies Foxtel Cup game in a couple of weeks.

Mitch Curnow (for Double Blues v Redlegs)
12 disposals, 6 marks, 33 hit outs, 3 clearances, 3 rebound 50s

Played in the ruck the whole day and had probably his best game for the year. Got back into some behind the play work and spreading from stoppage which we’ve been working on with him. He had an influence on quite a few marking contests and took 3 contested marks.

Jarrad Irons (for Combined Eagles reserves/U18s v State U18s)
No official stats available (non-SANFL game)

The Eagles team won easily and it was Jarrad’s best game for a long time. He got to play half forward, on-ball and a bit on the wing and had 28 possessions, 10 marks, a number of tackles and 5 clearances so it was really pleasing to see him get his hands on the ball and very good for his confidence going into the rest of the year.

Danny Butcher (for Roosters v Bulldogs)
20 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 5 inside 50s

It was Danny’s best game for the year, he showed a lot more spark and spread from the stoppages and a bit more of the tough stuff which we know he’s got. Unfortunately he got smashed in the nose in the middle of the third quarter and for the rest of the game he was on-and-off trying to stop the bleeding. He ended up with 20 possessions, a number of clearances and 3 tackles. Hopefully he can build on that performance for the rest of the year.

Ben Newton (for Bloods v Panthers)
25 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackle, 1 hit out, 9 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 4 goals

Probably his best game for the year in the Reserves with 25 possessions, kicked 4 goals playing on-ball and changing up forward. It was a real complete game with his attack on the ball there and having a number of clearances from centre bounces and around the ground. Ben continues to improve each week and hopefully we’ll see him get a crack at League footy in the next few weeks.
