PORT Adelaide forward Justin Westhoff says "everyone is on notice" at Alberton in the second half of the season following the club's disappointing start to the year.

The Power managed only two wins prior to their first bye last weekend to record their worst start to a season since 2000, and sit only percentage ahead of wooden-spoon favourite Gold Coast in 16th place on the AFL ladder.

Rookie coach Matthew Primus has made bold statements at selection in an attempt to find a mix of players capable of delivering a consistent four-quarter effort, dropping three-time best and fairest winner Kane Cornes, experienced players Danyle Pearce and Brett Ebert, dual All Australian Chad Cornes and leadership group members Jacob Surjan and Steven Salopek in the opening 11 rounds.

There's speculation Primus will make a number of changes to the playing list in October after his first full year in charge.

Westhoff said the players were aware some of them were playing for their futures.

"Everyone is on notice," Westhoff said on Tuesday.

"Only winning two games in the first half of the season isn't great and every player needs to look at their own performances and what they're doing for the team.

"If everyone does that the results will take care of itself."

Westhoff has been one of Port Adelaide's most consistent performers this season.

The 24-year-old's career appeared to be at the crossroads at this time last year when he was dropped to the SANFL.

The lanky utility's progress had been sporadic at best since his breakout year in 2007, and he admitted to "cutting corners" in regards to his training and preparation.

The three-week stint with Central District was a wake-up call for Westhoff, who responded to play the last nine games and finish eighth in the club's best and fairest award.

Westhoff's good form has flowed over into this season.

He's finally found his niche as a roaming tall forward, wingman and occasional back-up ruckman.

He's ranked top-10 in the competition for marks (74) and contested marks (21) and has also kicked 15 goals to trail only Robbie Gray on Port Adelaide's goalkicking list.

Westhoff revealed he would be rewarded for his career-best start to the season with a contract extension.

"It [a new contract] is in the pipeline," he said.

"I would love to stay around. This group's really looking good and is going to go places.

"Confidence plays a big part in the way I play and I can take a lot of confidence out of the first part of the season.

"Hopefully, at the end of the year I can say I've played a full year and have played really well."

The Port Adelaide players returned from a three-day break on Monday ahead of the club's clash with West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

Skipper Dom Cassisi will return to play in his native WA after making a successful comeback from a fractured leg in the SANFL last weekend.

Midfielder David Rodan also lined up in the local league, playing a half for the Norwood reserves but the Power are unlikely to risk his lack of match fitness on a big ground this week.

Westhoff said the club might look at employing another ruckman to help combat in-form Eagles duo Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui, who recorded 22 hit-outs to advantage in a dominant display against Adelaide last weekend.

"Negating those guys [Cox and Naitanui] will play a huge part in us winning the game," he said.

"Broges will have to play a huge part because Cox and Naitanui are two very high quality ruckmen.

"Myself and Jackson Trengove can also play a bit in there and depending on what the coaches want to do we might also bring another ruckman across, maybe Daniel Stewart."
