PORT Adelaide has lost to Hawthorn by 46 points after the Hawks kicked away in the third term.

Read the quarter-by-quarter match report below.

Pre Game

Dom Cassisi won the toss and elected to kick to the northern end of the ground amidst warm, still conditions.

Matt Thomas was a late withdrawal from Port Adelaide’s clash against Hawthorn with a corked thigh sidelining the small forward, replaced in the selected side by Cameron Hitchcock (playing as a substitute).

First Quarter

Port Adelaide fell behind the eight-ball early against the pre-game favourites with Luke Breust opening the Hawks account from a set shot.

After three wins on the trot, Port faced its biggest challenge of the season so far - coming up against one of the flag fancies in Hawthorn.

The Power were able to quickly respond through a mark and conversion to Jay Schulz to open Port Adelaide’s account for the evening, but Hawthorn quickly stamped its authority on the middle stanza of the term - booting the next four goals in quick succession through David Hale, Lance Franklin, Breust and Jarryd Roughead.

Up against it but still managing to work the ball inside 50, Port managed to work the ball back towards goals on several occasions but was unable to make the most of its opportunities.

Jay Schulz managed to crumb a ball and steady the ship for the Power by putting through his second for the evening and it seemed to lift the spirits of the side - managing to pile the pressure on the Hawks and force them to abort a handful of plays.

Former Adelaide player Jack Gunston kicked the Hawks’ six to open the margin out to 26 points late in the term, before some hard clearance work for the Power again gave Schulz the opportunity from outside 50 - unfortunately only netting a behind for the Power.

Despite this, Port’s ability to reduce Hawthorn’s options inside their defensive 50 cause the subsequent kick in to be coughed up to Power utility Paul Stewart who took the advantage and put through the Power’s third.

Paul Puopolo bagged Hawthorn's seventh for the term to carry the Hawks into quarter time with a 25 point lead over the Power.

Second Quarter

A see-sawing second quarter kept the crowd waiting for a goal to be kicked - both teams locked on their first break scores.

It wasn’t until the thirteenth minute that a goal was kicked - Breust getting his third for Hawthorn.

Port Adelaide again struggled to make its opportunities count - Schulz dropping a mark five meres from goal and generally not demonstrating the attacking pressure that served the side so well against Carlton.

Lance Franklin won a free kick from a push to put his second, and the Hawks’ ninth on the board.

Paul Stewart closed the margin back to 30 points from a clever Jay Schulz handpass - Port’s first, and only, for the quarter.

Third Quarter

Port Adelaide started the quarter as it finished - working the ball slowly into its 50 but not converting the chances it had.

After Justin Westhoff missed the final opportunity on the half time siren, he made sure to repent in the third term - crumbing a loose ball and putting it through running from thirty-five.

Hawthorn’s ability to quickly clear from the centre hurt Port again when Lance Franklin gained possession and put through Hawthorn’s tenth for the night.

The Power battled hard to maintain possession - playing on when opportune and kicking long when desperate.

Despite its best efforts to hold Hawthorn’s forwards down, the Power was unable to contain the Hawks chief attackers - notable Franklin who kicked his fourth for the night from another set shot and Jarryd Roughead who freakishly put one in from the tight angle of the pocket.

Jarrad Redden was subbed off late in the third term for Cameron Hitchcock.

Hawthorn maintains a 46 point lead at the final change.

Fourth Quarter

Stifled in the third quarter, Port Adelaide came out looking to make amends for its performance in the last.

Tackling hard from the outset, the Power again made every effort to give the forwards an opportunity, but it was Hawthorn who had all the answers - kicking four unanswered goals to seal the win.

Not for want of trying, but it was Port‘s inability to finish its movements that proved the difference on the night - everything from dropped marks on the cusp of the goal line to mis-kicking its set shots inside 50.

Andrew Moore kicked his first for the year from a handball receive to bring the gap back to 59 points, followed by a team goal finished by substitute Cameron Hitchcock late in the quarter.

Port gave its fans something to cheer about with a third consecutive goal to round out the match - this time to Jay Schulz snapping his third for the night around the body and bringing the margin back to a respectable 46 points.
