Matthew Nicks and Tyson Edwards reviewed the form of the Port Adelaide players who took the SANFL last weekend.

In wet and rough conditions, no one was able to perform to a stand out level amongst the SANFL player group, however there were some notably solid performances from of Simon Phillips and Jarrad Redden for opposing sides in the Norwood v Eagles clash at The Parade.

League

Steven Salopek (for Port Adelaide v Roosters)
11 disposals, 7 marks, 2 tackles, 3 inside 50s

Sal played wing and half forward and wasn’t used in the middle. He didn’t really have much influence on the game. He’s been in pretty good form in the last couple of weeks so it was disappointing to see him lose that impact on the ball.

Jarrad Redden
7 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 40 hit outs, 4 clearances, 1 inside 50

A really wet day at the Parade suited Reddo because of the high number of stoppages. Reddo got his hands on the ball quite a lot throughout the game and finished with 40 hit outs. He dominated through his strength and size throughout those stoppages and it was clogged up with a very wet, contested day. It was hard for him to influence in terms of hitting to advantage but we thought he stood up and did 70-80% of the ruck work for the Eagles in testing conditions.

Simon Phillips
9 disposals, 2 marks, 8 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 goals

Started fantastic with three goals in the first half and was very influential on the game with Norwood winning with just nine goals (so he kicked a third of their score). Using his speed he caught the Eagles with his pace around the back so it was another really solid game for Flipper again, although he was a little quieter in the second half. That’s his third good game in a row and it’s good to see him getting some confidence back.

Daniel Stewart
9 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 5 hit outs, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 goals

Snowy played entirely at deep forward and rucked a little bit down there. He ended up with 2.1 and didn’t really move up outside the forward 50 much. Daniel’s groundwork was pretty good for a big guy and won the footy with some good contested acts.

Reserves

Mitch Banner
20 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 5 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 goals

Mitchy ended up with 20 possessions playing on-ball, half forward and on the wing a little bit. He was tagged all game and struggled to great rid of it. Port got up and won the game but Mitchy was probably a little quieter than what he has been so we’ll need to work on that.

Mitch Curnow
7 disposals, 1 mark, 12 hit outs, 5 clearances, 1 inside 50

Mitchy’s jumping and competitiveness was a better than it has been in the last couple of weeks, which was a positive to see. It was mainly in the first half when he was at his best; unfortunately he faded out of the match in the last two quarters. There are still areas for him to improve on but we didn’t mind the way he played this week.

Jarrad Irons
18 disposals, 6 marks, 1 rebound 50

Jarrad didn’t have much impact on the game for the Eagles, he got the ball playing on a wing but just didn’t really seem to settle and attack the way we want him too which was disappointing given the steps forward he’s made in the past few weeks.
