Alipate Carlile (South)

Kicks 13 / Marks 7 / Handballs 6 / Goals 0 / Tackles 3

Alipate Carlile continues to keep pressure on for places in the Power’s defensive unit, with yet another great showing in the SANFL. Hopefully Carlile likes coffee because for the third time in five weeks, Power development coach Darren Trevena has named him, the Cibo Glenelg SANFL Power Player of the Week.

“I think he understand where he sits. He want’s to break back into the Power side. I think earlier in the year he just thought it was going to happen for him. Now he is doing extra work to try and break in and it’s showing in the games,” Trevena told PortAdelaideFC.com.au

“Darryl Wakelin (his mentor) always asks how he’s going and through his work with Wakes Alipate has improved a lot in his body-on-body work. His kicking is another area that has also improved from last year.”

In a match that saw South Adelaide lose by 39 points, Carlile kept his dangerous opponent goal-less and tried to get his team in the match.

“Alipate came up the ground while he was playing on (Clinton) Alleway, one of the league’s best forwards. Because Alipate was playing on him they wouldn’t kick it to him. Alipate tackled hard and his kicking was good. He ran off well and read the play. He’s in good form,” Trevena said.

“He seems to be pretty cool and calm under pressure. He does their kick-ins and his success rate from them is pretty high.”

Once again Carlile has edged out a number of players that came very close to being named, Power SANFL Player of the Week. Darren Trevena gives us the inside word on how they performed…

Nick Lower (Norwood)

K 6 / M 2 / HB 7 / G 0 / T 1

“Nick played on Chambers and kept him goalless for the first half but he kicked a couple on Nick in the second half. Nick was strong and tough and ran off his man.”

Adam Cockshell (Norwood)

K 5 / M 2 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 2

“Adam started on the bench and went to centre half-forward. Sturt’s backline was very good and Adam had one shot on goal and was probably starved of opportunities. He played in the back-line a bit as well.”

Fabian Deluca (Sturt)

K 4 / M 3 / HB 2 / G 1 / T 0 / HO 15

“Fabian was very good, he gave his players first use of the ball. He went up forward and offered a good option up forward. He caused a miss-match up forward and if he’d held more marks he probably could have been player of the round.”

Adam Thomson (Sturt)

K 9 / M 3 / H 9 / G 0 / T 3

“Another solid game by Adam, he’s probably not getting as many possessions as in previous games. He played a little bit down back, up forward and on-ball. Hopefully in the next few weeks he can settle down to an on-ball position where he can get a few more touches.”

Jonathan Giles (Central)

K 4 / M 2 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 1 / HO 11

“Up against Lindsay, I thought Giles was very good. He held front position and had 11 hit-outs. He didn’t go forward as he has in the past. He was pretty impressive for a young kid coming up against a big man who is one of the best ruckmen in the SANFL.”

Paul Stewart (Eagles)

K 1 / M 1 / HB 2 / G 0 / T 2

“He is struggling to get into the game at the moment. He backed back into a pack in the first quarter and showed some good courage. He also had a nice run down the field to the advantage of a team-mate. Overall he just needs to find a bit of confidence to get up and running.”

Nathan Batsanis (Eagles)

K 6 / M 1 / HB 3 / G 1 / T 2

“Batsanis played a half before an adductor injury which kept him off the field. When he’s got time and space he’s quite a good player and he was very lively early.”

Gavin Grose (North Adelaide)

K 5 / M 5 / HB 4 / G 0 / T 1

“Gavin played on one of South’s prime forwards and played quite well. Gav got his hand in there for a number of spoils. He read the play and ran off a couple of times and used the ball reasonably well.”

Hugh Minson (Norwood reserves)

“A very good game by Hugh, he had 22 touches and kicked 2.2 and took some strong marks up forward and on ball. He’s starting to push for some senior selection, he’s had three good games in a row now.”

Peter Hardy (Sturt reserves)

“Another solid game by Pete off the half-back flank. He is still working toward senior selection. With Sturt’s senior team going so well it’s hard for him to get in. He’s playing some good consistent footy.”

Alex Lee (Sturt reserves)

“It was probably the best game that I’ve seen him play for the year. He’s starting to hit some form. He kicked 3.1 and showed some good work ethic. He ran hard and took some contested marks. He’s starting to put some good form together, so let’s hope he holds it together.”

Ryan Williams (Central reserves)

“Ryan kicked five goals and played on-ball and got plenty of it. Another couple of weeks like that and I’m sure he’ll put his name up for senior selection at Central. Just with their (Central) depth and form right now it’s pretty tough.”
