PORT Adelaide veteran Kane Cornes says the Power's future is safe under CEO Keith Thomas.

The club has endured a second-straight disastrous season in 2012, registering just five wins so far after managing only three in 2011.

It hasn't played finals football since it was devastated in the 2007 Grand Final by an AFL-record 119 points and on the back of a record-low crowd (13,683) on Sunday, some media commentators have gone as far as questioning the future of the club.

But Cornes labelled Thomas, a South Australian Football Hall of Famer, "one the best appointments the club" had ever made.

"We've got some really good people at this footy club that aren't going to let anything bad happen," Cornes said.

"It comes down to a lot of hard work and the people in the right places and we'll be fine.

"[Keith Thomas has] got a great football background, a great work background, so he's certainly one of the best appointments the club's ever done.

"He builds great relationships with the players and he's addressed the players on a number of occasions and he's a very impressive individual."

Thomas played 304 games for Norwood in the SANFL from 1979-86 and 1989-92 and two seasons with Fitzroy in the VFL in 1987-88.

Post football, he spent 13 years at DMG radio from 1997-2010 and recently worked as management consultant to the Adelaide Oval renovations for the Stadium Management Authority.

Thomas joined the club in a time of turmoil, shortly after long-term premiership coach Mark Williams resigned.

With the Matthew Primus experiment failing to deliver what the club had originally hoped, Thomas said a new senior coach would be appointed by September's Grand Final.

Cornes said whoever was made senior coach would inherit a great list; certainly one capable of far more than it has shown over the past two seasons.

"Keith Thomas is as good a football operator that I've ever seen, so I'm sure he'll do a great job in finding the right person and there's a lot of good candidates out there that will fit the bill pretty well," he said.

"We've got a huge amount of talent on our list … if we can get our better players through a full season of footy, playing together and playing a lot of footy together then I've got no issue with where the playing list's at.

"It's a very good list and injuries and suspensions and all those sort of things have hurt us, so at some point in time we're going to get the list together, playing together, and you'll see the benefits of that."
