ON the back of Port Adelaide’s fourth win for 2012, young midfielder Hamish Hartlett has credited a settled on-field structure for the Power’s recent return to form.

After a best on ground performance where he kicked three goals, Hartlett believes that last year’s middle-tier of players hitting the next level of their development as AFL footballers had brought on the Power’s last three wins.

“I think we’ve added some really quality players to our list... and guys have taken their footy to another level,” said Hartlett.

“Matty Broadbent... is kicking goals, winning clearances and has just been so vital to us. Benny Jacobs has been a bit the same and has really improved as well so bit of that and a great preseason for a majority of the players which we harped on pretty early in the season has held everyone in really good stead.”

As the front and back sixes continue to settle, Hartlett believes that the Power’s strong focus on maintaining on-field structure has brought Port Adelaide’s competitiveness to a higher level.

Prior to its win over North Melbourne, Port Adelaide had endured close losses to likely finalists Essendon, Sydney Swans, Collingwood and Adelaide in addition to potential top eight contenders Richmond and Fremantle.

Despite those results, Hartlett said that there was no doubting the desire of the playing group in those performances and expects the club’s spate of competitive efforts to continue as his emerging teammates play with confidence.

“There’s no doubt we’ve been trying to win games but it takes a bit of consistency within the group and that’s what happened and we’ve got some great results,” he said.

“We’ve always wanted to try, there’s no doubt about that... there’s guys that may be a bit underdone, they’ve come in and have a few games under their belt now so they’re able to do that more consistently and try more consistently.

“We’ve really added a strong focus on sticking to our structures and trying to stick to our structures for four quarters -that’s probably something that we haven’t done all year except for round one.

“Everyone played their role and you get great results when everyone plays their role.”
