Rnd 21 SANFL wrap-up
DANIEL Stewart has continued his rich vein of form, booting 4.3 for North Adelaide to help them to a comfortable win over Norwood at the Parade
The big man had been consistently kicking goals for North’s reserves before being promoted to their league side, where he has since cemented a spot. His performance on Friday night earned him his third Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week award in the past 10 rounds.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
In other games, Justin Westhoff and Jonathan Giles both booted four goals, while Mitch Farmer continued his good form with 20 possesions. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Daniel Stewart (for North v Norwood @ the Parade) – Another very good game from Stewie, this time playing mainly forward. He had 3 different opponents during the game such was his dominance up forward, where he booted 4.3. He was aggressive going for his marks and could have kicked 7, with a couple of relatively easy misses. His last two months have been very impressive, and had the season been going a bit longer, he would have been close to being elevated. See highlights of Stewie’s game here on PTV
Mitch Farmer (for South v Central @ Elizabeth) – Another good effort from Mitch, who has steadily improved since making the switch to South. Starting to win a bit more of the ball at the stoppages and providing some good rebound from defence. He finshed with 20 possessions and 4 tackles.
Justin Westhoff (for Central v South @ Elizabeth) – Westy was very good, presenting well up the ground and applying some good defensive pressure, with 5 tackles. He finished with 18 kicks, 11 marks and 4.2.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v West @ Woodville) – Had a slow start, but to his credit, and mainly due to his work rate, he got himself involved in the game. Played mainly in defence and kept his man relatively quiet, while also pushing forward to kick a goal himself. Had 20 possessions and 7 marks.
Matt Lobbe (for West v Eagles @ Woodville) – Matty probably won the ruck against two opponents, with 40 hitouts. He wasn’t as effective as he has been around the stoppages but still worked hard. It was a very stop-start game, which meant he had a lot of work to do. Finished with 8 possessions and 3 tackles.
Michael Pettigrew (for West v Eagles @ Woodville) – Michael played on Passador the whole game and despite having 4 kicked on him, he worked hard and spoiled the ball well. He was a bit unlucky to have 4 kicked on him in the end, but with the ball coming forward regularly, it was always going to be a difficult day. He helped out well at times, taking some intercept marks but just needs to rebound from defence a bit more.
Matthew Martin (for West v Eagles @ Woodville) – Matty played his first league game for the year and finished with 4 kicks, 1 mark and a goal. He was involved in a lot of marking contests but against good opposition in Ken McGregor, couldn’t take as many grabs as he’d have liked. Played a bit in the ruck and didn’t look out of place, using his strength well. He’ll be looking to build on that performance.
Danny Meyer (for Glenelg v Sturt @ Unley) – Started down back and linked up well, rebounding from defence. Then moved forward to a half forward flank where he worked hard to present well, but didn’t get used often enough. Applied some good defensive pressure and got to the right positions around the marking contests. Finshed with 10 kicks, 2 handballs, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 1.1.
Jonathan Giles (for Central reserves v South reserves @ Elizabeth) – A great game from Joffa playing in the ruck and up forward. He worked very hard around the ground to make himself a target and looked good up forward, taking some strong grabs. Some great numbers for him with 18 kicks, a massive 19 marks, 8 handballs, 27 hitouts and 4.2. His best game for the year.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles reserves v West reserves @ Woodville) – Mitch was ill going into the game but battled well through it to finish with 20 possessions and 7 tackles. He ran well for 7 handball receives and 6 inside 50s. His workrate was good but we’ll just be looking for a few more clearances from him in the future.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v West reserves @ Woodville) – Reddo dominated the ruck once again with 28 hitouts, but it was good to see him this week go forward and kick a few goals, finishing with 3.1. He judged the ball well in the windy conditions and took some good contested marks. An encouraging game from the big man.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Eagles reserves @ Woodville) – A bit of a different role for Jesse, playing a run-with role on Leigh Treeby in the midfield. He battled hard, restricting Treeby’s influence and managing to get 4 clearances himself. He read his housemate’s (Jarrad Redden) taps well and finished with 19 touches.
Wade Thompson (for North reserves v Norwood reserves @ the Parade) – Not one of Wade’s best games, with just 9 touches and 2 tackles. He needs to keep working on using his pace and staying involved in the game for longer periods.
Nick Lower and Matt Westhoff both picked up slight injuries last week and didn’t play on the weekend.
