With the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval underway, Port Adelaide supporters have been urged to become members of the club if they want the chance to secure the best available seats at the Power’s new home from 2014.

Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas witnessed Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Premier Jay Weatherill celebrate the start of construction work at the world famous ground.

“For Port Adelaide and all of our supporters this is a really significant moment as we head towards 2014,” Mr Thomas said.

For Port Adelaide, it’s a case of ‘going home’ to the venue where the club won more than 20 SANFL premierships and triumphed in the historic first AFL match in the city of Adelaide at the end of the 2011 season.

While the club is finalising seating allocation arrangements, it is committed to rewarding loyalty.

Those who are members in 2012 and 2013 - the final seasons at AAMI Stadium - will receive priority access to the finest available seats at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval.

“You’ve got to be a member in 2012 to guarantee the best opportunity to view footy from the best seats in 2014,” Thomas said.

Port Adelaide AFL members will be seated in the new southern and eastern stands at Adelaide Oval. If you prefer the western grandstand, you should become an Essential Power member through the SANFL.

An almost two-year construction phase has begun with the removal of seats from the Sir Donald Bradman Stand and Chappell grandstands, and the removal of concrete terracing around the northern boundary.

At the ceremony marking the start of work on the $535 million project, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the redevelopment would give the oval “a future every bit as grand as its past”.

“There was that wonderful preview, when Port played Melbourne at the end of last year, of what AFL footy will be like here from 2014,” Ms Gillard said.

“I know through this redevelopment and the other work that is happening … the city can look forward to its future with pride.

“Part of that sense of pride will be with what happens here seeing in just two years from now one of the great sporting grounds of this country rise up around us.”

SA Premier Jay Weatherill used the beginning of construction to describe what it would be like when AFL football moved to the heart of Adelaide.

“People cascading across by footbridge, coming in by public transport, coming to be part of this fantastic experience and after having a great match, maybe a Showdown where 50,000 people crammed into this stadium, they’ll then start filtering out back into the city enjoying the coffee shops, the restaurants and all of the enterprises that aren’t even there now but will grow off the back of this fantastic investment,” Mr Weatherill said.

Port Adelaide 2012 membership packages start at just $190 for home game access, with easy part payments available through the PAFC Forever instalment plan.
