Westhoff Earning Rewards
Justin Westhoff's off-season work reaped rewards in the Power's narrow win over West Coast on Saturday night.
Westhoff clearly enjoyed the freedom of being released onto the ball. He won 27 possessions, took nine marks and kicked a goal in the Power's three-point win.
The 23-year-old credits that to the weight he has put on, improved fitness he's gained and to coach Mark Williams for giving him the chance further up the ground.
"I'm still getting used to playing through the midfield and I'm just glad to do my part for the team to help get the four points," Westhoff said.
"It's the best I've ever been fitness and weight-wise. I'm just looking forward to continuing on this form over the next month to really get off to a good start to the season."
Westhoff kicked 76 goals in 50 games coming into the season, but is now revelling in extra time through the midfield where he partners Dean Brogan in the ruck.
"It adds another string to my bow and I'm enjoying it. It frees up another spot for a forward to come through and I give credit to Choco and Matty [Primus] for getting me up to speed with guys like Brogs who dominate the ruck," he said.
"The more times you get the ball the more confident you will get. I was lucky enough to get a bit of the ball and hopefully I keep that going, and as a team we can take this form into next week."
Not only has Westhoff noticed an improvement in himself, but in the team's resolve; he feels the Power would have lost to the Eagles if in the same situation last year.
West Coast dominated the third quarter to lead by 13 points at three-quarter time, but the Power hit back.
Westhoff put the turnaround down a newfound confidence and stronger resolve in the group. He also hopes it continues next Saturday at home to the Brisbane Lions.
"Coming into three-quarter, we thought that we were down and out and that pretty much everything was against us. Last year we probably would have let a game like that slip and blow out a little bit, but credit to the boys for coming back and to get over the line was a pretty good feeling," he said.
"We were getting dominated through the midfield and had to switch on there. We got really good drive through (Travis) Boaky, Dom (Cassisi) and guys like that who really set our forwards up with quick ball inside-50.
"That is our game style and when we do that, most of the time we normally win."
