THE PORT ADELAIDE Football Club has completed a review of its football operations as part of a wide ranging examination of all aspects of the club’s performance in 2008.

Chief Executive, Mark Haysman said the results of the review would be immediately factored into the Power’s pre-season program.

“It’s imperative we implement the outcomes, ideas, innovations and directions of the review now to give ourselves the best possible preparation for 2009,” Haysman said.

“Through a thorough internal process and with external input from some highly respected AFL people we’re confident we’ve got some really useful information.

“There is no doubt we made some progress late in season 2008 and the challenge for us is to harness that and turn the information we have gleaned since into results.”

The review involved Coach Mark Williams, General Manager – Football Operations Peter Rohde, PAFC Board member Darryl Wakelin, inaugural Power CEO Brian Cunningham, and dual AFL premiership player David Pittman.

Among the results the review recognised:

-- A need to improve the fitness program
--A need to restructure the leadership program and methods
-- Ball movement from defence, clearances, and inside 50s as areas to address
-- A focused, professional and thorough coaching group
-- The invaluable opportunities provided to young players in late 2008
-- The strategic list management that will benefit key senior players in 2009
-- The insight to complement our football staff with quality people from recently successful AFL clubs

“Our football department has already moved to address one of our key shortcomings via the appointment of our new Head Fitness Coach, Cameron Falloon,” Haysman said.

“And we will be adding to that appointment soon by finalising the recruitment of some equally innovative backroom staff with track records of success at other AFL clubs.

“Combined with the opportunities we have through our selections from a very talented draft pool, all of this has us really excited about season 2009.”
