The Giants kicked the first two goals of the match through Tomas Bugg - the first from a typical set shot, the second from a free conceded by Power backman Jackson Trengove for a push down after the goal.
Turning over possession from a kick in the deep back pocket the Power conceded a third successive goal to Devon Smith.
GWS controlled the play for the majority of the term, but Port Adelaide failed itself time and again as turnovers from defensive kicking rewarded the Giants with regular supply of the football.
Feeding the ball forward, the Power managed to score two behinds to avoid going scoreless in the opening term.
Jay Schulz took a strong contested mark to kick Port’s first goal after the quarter time siren.
Port Adelaide’s effort, intensity and skill execution were absent in the term, and will need to be found heading into the second term.

But the Giants had all the answers, clearing from the centre bounces and setting up their forwards clinically.
With the Giants putting on the first three goals of the term, Port Adelaide managed to break down the GWS structure half way through the quarter to kick its second for the game through Paul Stewart.
Brett Ebert steadied the boat for Port Adelaide when he kicked forward the Power’s second consecutive goal.
The Power’s second half of the term was in stark contrast to the preceding 45 minutes as it set itself to dictate the play and win possession by attacking the football.
Justin Westhoff was able to mark strongly on the far side of forward 50 to convert the Power’s third consecutive goal for the match.
Port Adelaide trails by 25 points at the main break with its late quarter intensity requisite in the second half.

Third quarter
Although Port Adelaide had been stunned by the Giants’ combination of efficient ball usage and intensity at the ball, it responded swiftly out of the half time blocks with four goals bringing the margin back to 8 points.
Hartlett got the ball rolling with a long bomb from beyond the 50 metre arc.
Andrew Moore and Jay Schulz quickly followed with the pair combining to win the football from a marking contest as Moore put the six points through.
Brad Ebert quickly received the ball from his cousin Brett amidst a transition from Port’s defence to kick the Power’s fourth consecutive for the match.
The Giants quickly pushed numbers back to clog up the Power’s forward 50, but despite the congestion, the Power managed to find opportunities with strong marks inside 50.
The Giants managed to peg one back late in the term, but Port Adelaide certainly holds the momentum heading into the final change.

The final term started as an arm wrestle and the Power battled to win the possessions and couldn’t push the ball forward.
The Giants won several possessions to set up multiple goals and put the result beyond doubt.
The result was Port Adelaide’s fourteenth loss for the year and its most disappointing against a newcomer to the AFL, which stood up and fought hard for the win.
