SOUTH Australian football has recognised the contributions of three special Port Adelaide people in the SA Football Hall of Fame with Gavin Wanganeen, Warren Tredrea and Don McSweeny OAM inducted on Wednesday night.

They join fellow Port Adelaide inductees Bruce Abernethy, John Abley, Dave Boyd, Craig Bradley, John Cahill, Brian Cunningham, Leslie Dayman, Russell Ebert, Tim Evans, Josh Francou, Neville Hayes, Ned Hender, Scott Hodges, Sampson Hosking, Ray Huppatz, Vic Johnson, Bob McLean, Peter Mead, Geof Motley, Harold Oliver, Greg Phillips, Jeff Potter, Bob Quinn, Bull Reval, Ted Whelan, Mark Williams, Fos Williams and Peter Woite.

Wanganeen and Tredrea were appropriately inducted on the same night - both famous names in South Australian and national football.

Tredrea was Port Adelaide’s inaugural premiership captain in the AFL when the club defeated the Brisbane Lions in the 2004 AFL Grand Final.

He captained the club in his own right from 2006 until 2008 and was the club’s leading AFL goal kicker eight times, a four time All-Australian and four time best and fairest.

He remains Port Adelaide’s club and games record holder in the AFL.

Upon accepting his induction, Tredrea spoke of his love for the club, his family connection to Port Adelaide and the impact it had on his life.

Wanganeen debuted for Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 1990 and was subsequently drafted to Essendon where he played in the Bombers’ 1993 premiership and became the first indigenous player to be awarded the Brownlow Medal.

Significantly, he returned to Alberton at the end of 1996 to captain the club upon its entry into the AFL in the following year - doing so for the Power’s first four seasons of national competition.

The club’s 2003 best and fairest, he features in the Essendon and Indigenous teams of the century and was the first Indigenous player to play 300 AFL games.

Wanganeen is concurrently a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame (inducted in 2010).

He spoke volumes of the late Bob Quinn who helped him in his early days at the club and the great honour it was to captain the side in its first years in the AFL.

Don McSweeny OAM has worked tirelessly as a League Director of the SANFL and has served an important role in forging links between the Eyre Peninsula football community within Port Adelaide’s country zone and the football club.

His work has ensured talented young footballers have been seamlessly ushered from the country into the halls of Alberton Oval in a football involvement that spans well over fifty years.
