Winning without key duo hard: Choco
Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams says it will be difficult to beat Hawthorn without Domenic Cassisi and Peter Burgoyne
Cassisi and Burgoyne were both suspended after separate, off the ball incidents in last week’s 57-point win over Melbourne.
The Hawks have recalled tough onballers Brad Sewell and Jordan Lewis from injury along with ruckmen Simon Taylor and Robert Campbell.
Williams said he expected a very different Hawthorn side to turn up at the ‘G on Saturday compared with the opening three rounds.
“That mix of (Hawthorn) players hasn’t played all year and their 1-2 result right now has reflected that,” Williams said on Friday.
“They’ve got their best onballers back and they won by nine goals (without them) last week. I can imagine they’d be feeling like they’re getting us at the right time without Dom and Peter playing and we’ll have to be at our absolute best to get the result.”
Port Adelaide has been angered by the undisciplined, on-field acts of some of its players this season and has toyed with the idea of fining individuals who continue to let the team down through suspension.
Williams denied Hawthorn’s ‘unsociable’ brand of football would test his side’s balance of aggression this week.
“I think as long as they’re smart they won’t get reported,” Williams said.
Promising first-round draft-pick Hamish Hartlett will make his AFL debut against the Hawks.
Hartlett, 18, made his Power debut in the NAB Cup competition but suffered an AC joint injury in the quarter final loss to Geelong.
Williams said he was certain the versatile Hartlett could step up to the next level.
“Hamish trained extremely well through the pre-season and we thought he’d play round one, but unfortunately he hurt his shoulder,” Williams said.
“We don’t expect huge things from him in the first or second game, but we know that the early games are going to be very important for him and he’s going to be a long-term player for the club.”
Hartlett’s inclusion means regular midfielder David Rodan will spend another week in the SANFL.
Rodan, who played all 22 games last season, was dropped back to Norwood following the loss to West Coast and Williams said he had a bit more to prove before earning a recall.
“We weren’t thrilled with the way he (Rodan) was playing (before he was omitted). He played a pretty good game for Norwood, but I think the side won by 20 goals,” Williams said.
“We’re looking for chasing, tackling and those sorts of things, which he did a bit better, but in the scheme of things it wasn’t enough for us and given the opportunity to play Hamish we thought we’d play him.”
