Port Adelaide forward Jay Schulz has been ruled out of next weekend’s clash with Richmond after an examination of his scratched eye.

Schulz was substituted out of Balfours Showdown XXXII at AAMI Stadium on Sunday after suffering the injury in the second quarter.

The Power’s leading goal-kicker until Round 5 will miss Sunday’s encounter with the Tigers, with whom he played 71 games before being traded to Alberton at the end of 2009.

Schulz - who is still wearing a patch on his wounded right eye - was examined by a specialist on Monday afternoon and will undergo a further assessment next week.

It's the second freakish eye injury suffered by a Port Adelaide player in 2012, with Chad Wingard forced from the ground in the Round 2 encounter with Essendon. He played the following week against Sydney.

Schulz's absence could open the way for the return of fellow tall forward Daniel Stewart, who was replaced in Port Adelaide’s Balfours Showdown side by David Rodan after playing in the opening four rounds of the season.

Justin Westhoff and John Butcher were among Port Adelaide’s best players, kicking four goals each, despite losing Schulz from the forward set-up.

Port Adelaide hosts Richmond at AAMI Stadium from 2.45pm on Sunday.
