Ex-Tigers Turn On the Power
David Rodan says Jay Schulz and Danny Meyer are playing terrific football at their new home
Schulz continued his purple patch of good form, kicking five straight goals, while Meyer won his position in defence and also generated run, with six inside 50s.
Rodan and Meyer were both delisted by the Tigers between 2006-08, while Schulz was traded to the Power in October, after reaching a mutual agreement with coach Damien Hardwick to move on.
Rodan has been a revelation since being offered a lifeline by Port Adelaide with the last live pick in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft and said it was pleasing to see two other former Tigers making the most of their second chances.
“It’s an ongoing joke between myself, Jay and Danny Meyer that we’re the ‘Richmond rejects’. We played a fair bit of reserves together at the Tigers, so we’ve got a good connection there,” Rodan said.
“Jay’s come good. We always knew that he had a great kick and could take a great mark and with Tredders finishing Jay’s showed that there’s a spot there for him.
“It’s good to see both Danny and Jay making their careers last a bit longer and it’s a good story.”
Rodan, 26, was instrumental in the Power’s big win over the Dees, finishing with 15 possessions (nine contested) and a team-high eight tackles and eight clearances.
Speedy onballer Danyle Pearce also overcame some close attention from Nathan Jones to have an impact, with 20 touches, eight inside 50s and a goal.
Port Adelaide was a man down, after losing forward Brett Ebert to a suspected ACL injury in the first term and Rodan said the team had showed good fighting spirit to runaway with the game.
“It was the story of the day…everyone just kept battling through and we played some great footy,” Rodan said.
“Melbourne is a great young and up-and-coming team, but if you look at the age of our list and the number of games played you’ll see we have a very young list - I think it’s the youngest in the competition.
“It gives us good confidence to kick away in that third quarter and get over Melbourne. Hopefully, we can keep this list together for a little while and that we’ll get some success in the near future.”
