Choco gives tick to master and apprentice
Mark Williams says he can see himself coaching beyond 2011 and two coaches working together can give a club the best of both worlds
A Melbourne newspaper writes that Williams has agreed to such an arrangement but Williams said he was not at liberty to discuss the details of his contract.
The Age reports that Williams could take on a "directing of coaching" role – similar to what Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse has agreed to – and Williams described the new Magpies’ model with Malthouse and Nathan Buckley as brilliant.
“There’s no reason why it [the succession plan] can’t work if both parties go in with eyes wide-open,” Williams said.
“You keep two quality people that love the club at the club and you also keep continuity of understanding of players. You have a fresh point of view, but you have the soundness of a very steady, guiding hand in the background that has many years of experience in different situations that the young coach would take 10 years to pick-up or may never pick-up.
“If you consider those things you get the best of both worlds.”
A full-time position on the Port Adelaide coaching panel is available after assistant coach Tony McGuinness revealed he would vacate his post.
The Power wanted to expand McGuinness’ part-time role, but the former Adelaide captain was unable to commit to the club because of business interests.
Williams refused to confirm or deny whether former player Damien Hardwick, who is in the running for both the Richmond and North Melbourne senior positions, was a target for the vacant assistant job.
Williams said the cash-strapped club’s decision to expand the part-time role was a positive one.
“Can we get the absolute, top-of-the-tree, best person [for the assistant job]? Last year we tried to get Scott Burns for a long time and West Coast paid him probably three times what we were going to pay him, so that makes it impossible for us to compete against them.”
Williams confirmed two changes to the Power side to take on Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
Ruckman Dean Brogan and Matt Thomas will replace Steven Salopek and Brett Ebert, who were omitted because of inconsistent form.
Chad Cornes (finger/knee), Troy Chaplin (bruised shin) and Jacob Surjan (corked calf) all trained on Friday morning and are expected to play.
Inconsistency has been an issue for Port Adelaide all season and Williams conceded it was one of his most frustrating years at the club.
“You can be a down club on the way up or a top club just cruising along, but we’re up and down so much that it’s difficult to get a line on exactly what’s going on,” Williams said.
“You can come up with a thousand different reasons, but the consistency has been sub-standard. We’ll continually try and address that and whether we make the finals or not we want to make sure we address that inconsistency."
