It has been seven weeks - longer for many - since Port Adelaide's supporters were able to cheer their side on at Adelaide Oval.

SEVEN weeks doesn’t sound all that long but in the current climate it certainly is. A lot has happened in the last 42 days.

16 days in a Gold Coast hub, four wins, two more trips to Queensland and now plans for four games in 15 days.

All of that since Port Adelaide last played a game at Adelaide Oval.

There’s something special about the Port Adelaide fans, they just bring their passion to every game

- Ken Hinkley

Since then, only two things have been constant; Port Adelaide has been top of the AFL ladder and it has enjoyed the support of its True Believers.

On that day, Saturday 13 June, Port belted the Crows by 75 points to claim Showdown honours in front of a small but very significant crowd.

Port Adelaide's players applaud the small but vocal crowd at Showdown XLVIII - the last time the Power graced Adelaide Oval.

42 days later, the club will be back at its home ground with a significantly bigger live audience of the most loyal and passionate supporters in the competition.

And, it is fair to say the players and coaches cannot wait.

“It’s exciting for us to go home and play a game at Adelaide Oval when we haven’t played there since Round 2,” said coach Ken Hinkley.

“I think the fans will be pretty happy to see the boys. I know the boys will be happy to see them and hear them.

“There’s something special about the Port Adelaide fans, they just bring their passion to every game, winning or losing, they bring their passion.”

Singing Never Tear Us Apart before tomorrow night's clash with St Kilda is a moment Port Adelaide supporters have been looking forward to for months.

It is a sentiment echoed by development coach Chad Cornes, who has experienced the support as both player, runner and coach.

“Gee the boys are excited to be back in front of our crowd,” he explained.

“The noise they made when there was a couple of thousand there in the Showdown in Round 2 was amazing, we couldn’t believe it, so to have around 25-thousand there this week, to run out to that amount of noise and the passion in the crowd will just be brilliant.

“We definitely can’t wait to get back in front of those guys.”

The capacity of Adelaide Oval has been reduced under current COVID-19 guidelines to 23,400 and around 19,000 tickets were snapped up by Port Adelaide members on the first day the Member Ticket Allocation was open on Tuesday.

Players like ruckman Peter Ladhams are excited to be back home and aiming to reward the club’s members for sticking by them during the recent tough times.

“It’s been a big couple of weeks and then going into the hub as well, it’s been massive so it’s good to be able to stay in Adelaide for the weekend and hopefully get some friends and family to the game to watch and obviously the supporters in Adelaide as well,” he said.

“It’ll be huge and it’ll definitely give us an advantage.”

Port Adelaide skipper Tom Jonas is also looking forward to repaying his club's loyal supporter base and has no doubts about the atmosphere at the oval regardless of any limits to the venue's capacity.

“It’s going to be nice to have a few games at Adelaide Oval, mainly for our fans to be able to come and watch us after supporting us from afar,” he said.

“They’ve been so loyal and supportive and it’ll just be a great reward for them.

“We also love playing in front of that roar and 20,000 will probably feel like 50,000 knowing our supporters.”
