Taj Schofield goes through his paces at the South Australian NAB AFL Draft Combine at Adelaide Oval.

PORT ADELAIDE father-son prospect Taj Schofield has put in an impressive showing at the South Australian NAB AFL Draft Combine to do his chances of being drafted plenty of favours.

The 18-year-old was among 21 male and four female players named to undergo testing at Immanuel College and Adelaide Oval as part of the combine.

Injuries prevented some from taking part including Port Adelaide Next Generation Academy participant Lachlan Jones (ankle) – who Port has priority selection over on draft night – and other leading draft prospects Riley Thilthorpe (groins), Tom Powell (calf), Kaine Baldwin (knee) and Corey Durdin (hamstring).

Schofield – the son of 2004 premiership midfielder and current Port midfield coach Jarrad Schofield – placed in the top five of each event except the 2km Time Trial.

In that event he finished a very respectable sixth.

The Woodville-West Torrens Under 18s player took out the Standing Vertical Jump, reaching 63cm despite standing at just 177cm himself.

South Australia Under 18 coach Tony Bamford told Adelaide radio on Thursday that Schofield was one of the more impressive performers.

“Taj Schofield probably comes up best on the numbers,” Bamford said.

“Looking at them quickly last night, he tested in the top five for five of the six measurements that we took.

“He’s had a really good back third of the year, he’ll play finals with the Eagles in the Under 18 competition starting this weekend and he’s really hit some fine form.

“It’s good to see him test really well.”

James Borlase who is the son of Port Adelaide premiership captain Darryl Borlase, who played 246 SANFL games for Port including four premierships, was among the others to impress on the day.

He placed in the top five in the Agility test and the Standing Vertical Jump but unfortunately qualifies as part of the Adelaide NGA because he was born in Egypt, giving the Crows first choice to select him.

Central District’s Brodie Lake was probably the stand-out performer on the day.

The Northern Territory product, who played U18s and Reserves for the Bulldogs, showed off his explosive power by running an eye-catching 2.907 seconds in to win the 20m Sprint ahead of Glenelg’s Xavier Robins, who was the only other player to break the three-second barrier.

Lake, a Gold Coast Suns Next Generation Academy prospect, posted a blistering 7.90 seconds to claim honours in the Agility Test ahead of mature-age Bloods recruit Mitch Duval on 7.98 seconds.

The 18-year-old from Southern Districts in the Top End also placed inside the top two of the three jumps events.
