FOUR POINTS
Call up chanceWith a growing injury list the Magpies are a chance to call up a handful of youngsters for their first League game of the season. With Henry Slattery, Anthony Biemans, Angus Bruggeman, Ben Haren and Robbie Young mixing it at League level this season, that leaves Nathan Krakouer, Danny Butcher, Sam Gordon, Zac Hawkins, Jake Johansen, Aseri Raikiwasa, Ben Sawford and Matt Venter mixing it for a call up.
Underdogs?
It hasn’t been common to see the Magpies go into an SANFL game as favourites for some time, but that will be the case this weekend with Port Adelaide on top of the ladder thanks to its percentage, while Central District is experiencing an uncharacteristic down year, sitting ninth after eight games. The test will come for this young group of Magpies against the seasoned heads in the Bulldogs lineup. Port played well on the wide Elizabeth Oval during the trial games, but that ground would be better suited for their spreading game. Alberton is a little more constrictive than the Ponderosa, and the Bulldogs will be hunting a big scalp..
SANFL Indigenous Round
It’s the SANFL’s Indigenous Round this weekend and several Aboriginal players are a chance to pull on the prison bar guernsey for it. Robbie Young is an obvious candidate to retain his spot having performed serviceably for several weeks, while Nathan Krakouer is in the mix for a call up. Then there’s AFL talents like Brendon Ah Chee and Karl Amon who have been consistent performers for the black and white this year. With a rich heritage of indigenous player develop – brought to the fore by the inclusion of 1994 premiership player Andrew McLeod in the Australian Football Hall of Fame this week – Port Adelaide will want to do its many great justice on Sunday.
Harvey’s education
With Brent Renouf and Jarrad Redden both out of the side this weekend, Mitch Harvey’s education as a ruckman will be upped alongside Angus Bruggemann and pinch-hitting utility Ben Haren. Harvey has hit a good patch of form up forward midway through the season, but it’s his rucking that he’ll want to develop as he improves his total game. An aspect to watch this Sunday.
