PORT ADELAIDE is ready to embrace its next challenge in the SANFL when it travels to Noarlunga to face the undefeated South Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers have defeated the Crows and North Adelaide in the opening two rounds while the Magpies secured their first win by defeating Central District in round two.
The Magpies overcame a 26-point half-time deficit to win by 17 points at Alberton Oval following a stirring second half display, and coach Matthew Lokan is looking for that momentum to continue.
“I think that's the challenge for us is to be able to do that for four quarters,” he told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“We certainly showed that we can play at an elite SANFL level last week in the second half.
“I think it's just working on areas of our game to be able to do things for longer. I think that's the challenge for a young group is to be able to perform for long periods of time.
“You’re not going to win too many games when you just play for 60 minutes. We've worked on it; the boys know what it looks like when we play well, and we'll try and obviously be able to do that for longer this week.”
Lokan said the Panthers’ big threats are off halfback and through the middle.
“They're very even across the whole park, but they get a lot of drive from their halfbacks,” he said.
“Joe Haines and Matty Broadbent across halfback set up a lot of play for them and Joel Cross has been one of the best midfielders in the competition for a number of years now.
“He's certainly started off in really good form this year.”
The Magpies could be without some AFL-listed players due to injuries to Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters and both SANFL and AFL games being on the same day in different states.
Lokan is expecting the whole team to lift to accommodate any changes.
“All the guys know that they need to come in and play their role,” he said.
“So, we won't look for any one person to improve us as a team, we just know that the 22, that play have to play their role, and if they do that we’ll hopefully get the result we're after.”
The first bounce is at 2.10pm at Noarlunga.
