PORT ADELAIDE has used its sole selection at the AFL’s mid-season rookie draft to add Sturt midfielder Jed McEntee to its list.

McEntee was taken with the 13th pick in Wednesday night’s draft, held online via AFL.com.au.

The 176-centimetre midfielder was part of the South Australian Under-18 side at the 2019 national championship alongside new Port Adelaide teammates Jackson Mead and Taj Schofield.

Having debuted for Sturt in Round 1, 2020, McEntee won the Cec May Best Emerging Talent Award after playing every game that season.

The 20-year-old has featured in all eight games for the Double Blues this season, averaging 19.1 disposals, 5.4 tackles and 4.1 clearances per game.

Port Adelaide’s list manager Jason Cripps said McEntee was a player the club had kept tabs on over recent years.

“Jed is a player we liked in his draft year in 2019,” Cripps said.

“While he has been playing primarily as a midfielder, he possesses speed and agility that we think would be suited in our front half.

“We expect he will need some time to settle in and find his feet but we are confident he can add something to our list.”

McEntee is the second player – after Cam Sutcliffe in 2019 - to join the club through a mid-season rookie draft.
