PORT ADELAIDE midfielder Connor Rozee has collected his first All-Australian blazer after his outstanding season was recognised by the selectors of the 2022 Therabody All-Australian team.
The talented 22-year-old played all 22 matches this season, averaging a career-best 23.2 disposals, 3.2 clearances and 3.5 tackles per game.
Rozee also booted 18 goals.
What is most remarkable is that he started the season quietly while playing as a forward and only shifted on the ball in Round 5.
Rozee was named on the interchange bench, squeezed out of a strong starting midfield featuring stars Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver, Touk Miller, Patrick Cripps, Callum Mills and Lachie Neale.
The fifth pick in the 2018 AFL National Draft was the only Port Adelaide player selected in the final 22 announced on Wednesday, and said it came as a surprise.
“It’s a pretty cool feeling,” Rozee said. “I definitely wasn’t expecting it so I think that makes it a bit more special and something I’ll remember forever.
“We didn’t get the success we wanted as a team but it’s nice to have this.
“It was a bit of an adjustment when I first went in (the midfield) but I’ve done a few pre-seasons as a midfielder now so I feel like that’s helped prepare me to go in there.
“I feel like I’ve been learning so much while I’ve been in there and trying to learn off Travis (Boak) and Ollie (Wines), some of the great midfielders from our club, so I feel like I’m trying to get better and there’s still a long way to go.”
Earlier, Rozee also finished in the top five in the AFL Coaches’ Association Champion Player of the Year Award. He collected a total of 88 votes – ten behind joint winners Touk Miller (Gold Coast) and Clayton Oliver (Melbourne) – after polling in 13 of the club’s 22 games.
Minor premiers Geelong had five players selected in the final All-Australian side, one more than any Melbourne, who had four.
The 2022 All Australian selection panel is Gillon McLachlan (chairman), Jude Bolton, Nathan Buckley, Kane Cornes, Andrew Dillon, Glen Jakovich, Gerard Healy, Chris Johnson, Cameron Ling, Nick Riewoldt and Brad Scott.
