PORT Adelaide coach Matthew Primus has rejected claims key defender Troy Chaplin has received a four-year offer from Richmond, saying that Chaplin denies any contact with rival clubs.

With Chaplin's status as a restricted free agent, he is only permitted to leave the Power if they can't match the offers from rival clubs.

It was reported in The Advertiser on Wednesday that as many as five AFL clubs were chasing the 26-year-old and that Richmond had already put a four-year deal on the table.

Primus said Chaplin had told him otherwise.

"All the discussions that we've ever had with Troy is that he hasn't spoken to anybody, his manager hasn't spoken to any other club, so we'll take Troy on that word and keep working with him," he said.

"He plays an important part for us for the rest of the year and we see him as somebody that's going to be a part of our football club.

"He's telling us the exact same thing from his point of view."

But Primus wouldn't confirm whether the Power would definitely match a rival offer for the defender.

"We'll play that through, but [as far as] he's aware, he hasn't been spoken to by anyone and we have been in contract negotiations with him," he said.

"We'll play that out and this is what free agency is all about, but Troy's certainly not happy with the article in today's paper, he says it's the furthest thing from the truth."

Playmaker Danyle Pearce is another free agent who could have immediate impact at a rival club.

Also 26, Pearce is yet to re-sign with the Power and had previously attracted the attention of Greater Western Sydney, Port's opponent this weekend.

Primus said the club was in discussions with Pearce's management to ensure he remained at Alberton past 2012.

"We are discussing Danyle's future with us now with him and his management group, and all free agents will probably test the waters," he said.

"There's a lot of them out there now getting spoken about, and coming towards the end of the year it's becoming a topical point.

"We see Danyle as a vital prospect for us going forward."

The Power are desperate to rebound against the Giants on Saturday after a disastrous showing against Fremantle last weekend.

The final 27-point margin flattered the Power, who were completely outplayed in the first half.

A huge boost for the club will be the return of classy pair Hamish Hartlett and Jay Schulz.

Both have been sidelined since round 12, Hartlett with a hamstring complaint, while Schulz was forced into intensive care after a brutal clash with teammate Justin Westhoff.

Schulz suffered a potentially life-threatening ruptured bowel in the incident, but Primus said he would make his return on Saturday provided he got through training.

"He's a real competitor the way he goes about his footy … as soon as he got the all clear from the doc last week he's really set himself," Primus said.

"He can't wait to get back out there."
