PORT ADELAIDE tough nut Matt Thomas could join teammates Warren Tredrea, Chad Cornes and Steven Salopek on the sidelines for the rest of the season due to  possible stress fractures in his feet.

Thomas played the opening four games of 2008, but has managed just one game since having suffered separate plantar fascia and ankle injuries.

The gutsy 21-year-old sat out Wednesday’s main training session and was preparing for a meeting with the club doctor, which will determine the fate of his season.

In November 2006, Thomas lost 15kg and part of his bowel after experiencing complications from an appendectomy and spent the first half of 2007 on the comeback trail.

The talented Victorian managed an uninterrupted pre-season but the continuing injuries have again kept him off the track.

“This year has been much the same as last year, I suppose. Both years I’ve been reported and both years I’ve had injuries that have cost me about eight weeks straight,” Thomas said on Wednesday.

“Last year, I had my knee injury and this year, plantar fascia. I also had an ankle injury which took a couple of weeks to get over, so I haven’t had too much luck and this year looks a lot like last year on the record.

“This year, I did my first full pre-season, so having got that out the way, I thought I was going to have a pretty good year because in all the other years I haven’t really had a full pre-season.

“Now, it feels like I’m six weeks shy of another pre-season, so it’s gone pretty quickly this year without much luck.”

Midfielder David Rodan, said there were other young players ready to step up in the absence of the Power's injured stars.

"A lot of senior players out, a lot of key players in our team have got injured and it's been the story of the year really. But I guess with that you've got a lot of young guys getting opportunities," Rodan said.

"Matthew Westhoff was close last week, and younger guys you see coming up -- Travis Boak, Nathan Krakouer, all these guys stepping up -- so hopefully it gives them a bit more game time and bloods them in the season."

Peter Burgoyne, who missed last week through a club suspension, trained with his teammates on Wednesday and, considering the number of senior players on the sideline, is a good chance to resume this week.

"I think Peter's reacted pretty well. He's gone back and played good footy in the SANFL and kept positive," Rodan said.

"He's done everything right, been really professional and hopefully we see him soon. I'd love to have him back."
