Keys to victory

The Power was badly let down by crucial skill errors and poor ball movement against Fremantle. Most pundits have acknowledged that no brand of football holds up when the basic skills required to implement it fall over, but the fact remains that the Power’s skill set has disappeared over the course of July.

Turnovers - usually unforced through the poor execution of hand and foot skills - have haunted the Power after the mid year bye and is the chief area that the playing group must improve.

A strong win against the Giants on Saturday will come through the Power executing its skills correctly and that is exactly what coach Matthew Primus wants to see, rather than merely kicking a winning score.

Selection table

No significant injuries were reported from the loss against Fremantle, however changes to the side are expected with Jay Schulz and Hamish Hartlett set to be named as significant inclusions to the Power side.

The duo will be returning from respective abdomen and hamstring injuries sustained against the Western Bulldogs in Round 12.

Forming up

Kane Cornes

Cornes has been flying under the radar in 2012, but remains one of Port Adelaide’s most consistent players on the back of a best-on-ground performance on Sunday against the Dockers where he had 31 disposals. One of the Power’s most efficient ball users, he is likely to contribute significantly as a set-up man for his forwards.

Andrew Moore

Moore took 20 disposals in the last half of football against Fremantle as his credentials as the Power’s most exciting midfield youngster increase. His development has progressed well and Matthew Primus pointed to his second half performance as an indicator of Port Adelaide’s development program evolving the junior talent on the list. Moore will relish the opportunity to get stuck into some of the Giants’ own exciting prospects on the weekend.

Alipate Carlile

Playing on Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich on Sunday, ‘Bobby’ Carlile was impressive, himself touching the football 15 times en route to restricting his opponent to just two goals. It was Pavlich’s lowest return from seven matches and highlights Carlile’s return to form since his omission due to fitness concerns midway through the season.

Fact file

This is the first time that 2004 premiership heroes Dean Brogan and Chad Cornes and Premiership coach Mark Williams will have come up against Port Adelaide in the AFL.

Cornes and Brogan retired from Port Adelaide at the end of 2011 but were signed up by the Giants for 2012.

Williams currently serves as senior assistant coach to Kevin Sheedy at the Giants.

Final word

The Power will look to chalk up its sixth win of the year but supporters and coaches alike will want to see the players make a statement against the newcomers of the AFL.
