BOB QUINN is a legend of the Port Adelaide Football Club, and during this year’s ANZAC Round he has been recognised on the national stage with a feature article in the AFL Record.
Quinn was a captain, three-time premiership player, four-time best and fairest and two-time leading goalkicker for Port Adelaide, as well as, a two-time Magarey Medal winner.
Quinn’s legacy wasn’t just restricted to his football credentials - he is also the club’s greatest war hero. His devotion, courage and leadership in the ‘Battle of Tobruk’ earned him a Military Medal in 1943.
He epitomised everything the football club stands for and it reinforces how important ANZAC Round is to Port Adelaide.
Greg Quinn - Bob’s son - says his Dad was someone who thrived on hard work and leading, and now he and the rest of his family try to live by that legacy.
“Dad was someone who never wanted the limelight but he was such an incredible leader,” Greg Quinn said.
“He just wanted to go about his business but people couldn’t help but follow him.
“While he has been gone for 10 years, we as a family try to live by the legacy he left.
“We are just so grateful what he has done for our family. It set some wonderful examples and standards for hopefully our family to live by.”
Greg says the mutual love and respect the Port Adelaide Football Club and the Quinn family have for each other is a wonderful thing.
“The club has always made such a big fuss over Dad,” he said.
“When Dad passed away, the club was just outstanding to us - even just little things like inviting us to games as a family.
“We are involved on ANZAC Day still, where we present Dad’s medal - the club was a big part in wanting us to be involved in that.
“I’ve also been down to the club a couple of times to talk on Dad’s behalf which has been really rewarding.
“Dad was the first number one ticket holder of the Power, which was a fantastic thing for the family.”
For the first time, the AFL Record has expanded its list of all known VFL, SANFL, WAFL and Tasmanian players who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
