PORT ADELAIDE coach Lauren Arnell says Fremantle’s strength in the contest and ability to deal with the windy conditions better were the differences between the sides on Saturday evening.

Arnell’s side led for most of the game but the Dockers booted the only two goals of the last quarter to finish in front 4.5 (29) to 5.7 (37) at Alberton Oval.

Off the back of a win at the MCG over the Western Bulldogs last week, the Power started the brighter with young forwards Julia Teakle and Caitlin Wendland each hitting the scoreboard early.

But Arnell was left to lament her side’s inability to go with the Dockers against a strong breeze in the last quarter.

“We’re certainly disappointed to lose that game,” she said.

“It felt like obviously Freo would have come out of last week's game against the Crows pretty unhappy with their performance, and I think they showed a real hunger for the contest in crucial moments. I think that was a big part of the reason why they won.

“We've got some things that we measure ourselves by, and we didn't get a couple of crucial areas done, and particularly contested possession today.

“I think Freo were a bit smarter and managed the wind a little bit better, particularly when they had it.”

Teakle booted her second goal in the third quarter to move two goals clear of her nearest rival as the AFLW competition’s leading goalkicker with seven for the season so far.

She then moved into the backline as a spare in the last quarter as Arnell’s side attempted to limit the Dockers’ momentum and the impact of the stiff breeze.

“Teaks has gone back and saved us a couple (of goals),” Arnell said of the decision to shift her behind the play.

“It means that you lose one ahead of the ball, but it's a pretty significant breeze so it's like the timing of how you protect score and then try and score is a bit line ball.

“In AFLW, the quarters are so short. The difference between did we go too quickly or not is probably only a couple of minutes, to be fair. So, I’d make that decision again.”

Port Adelaide next faces the challenge of three games in nine days, starting with consecutive trips to Melbourne to face North Melbourne on Friday evening, then Richmond four days later.

The Power is next at home when it hosts Carlton on Sunday, 29 September from 4:35pm ACST.
